B-Mets Pre-Game Notes

The B-Mets racked up 15 hits, but lost to the Tren-ton Thunder in the series finale last night at Waterfront Park by an 8-5 score. Brahiam Maldonado matched a career-high with four hits, all of which were singles. Brandon Moore allowed four runs over five innings and left with the lead, but Binghamton could not hold the advantage. Erik Turgeon took over and tossed a scoreless sixth before allowing a pair of runs in the seventh. Austin Krum’s two-run homer in the eighth sealed the deal and kept the B-Mets from sweeping the series. Brad Hal-sey picked up the win with two shutout innings of relief. Ryan Pope threw a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Robert Carson makes his 21st start of the season and first against the Flying Squirrels. Carson was handed his team-leading tenth loss in his most recent start against the Reading Phillies on August 6. The lefty allowed five runs over four innings and walked four. Three of those free passes later scored.

LHP Clayton Tanner will make his 20th start of the season and first against Binghamton. Tanner won his second consecutive game by defeating the Portland Sea Dogs in his last start on August 6. The southpaw allowed four runs on five hits over 6.1 innings while striking out three along the way. Born in Australia, Tanner was selected in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft out of De La Salle High School in Concord, California. He was a com-pensation pick from the Chicago Cubs for Scott Eyre. He spent all of last year with Richmond, leading the team with 27 starts.

SUDDEN POWER: B-Mets utility man Jon Malo’s two-run homer in the fourth inning off Steve Garrison last night was his second in as many games. It was just the second time in Malo’s seven-year career that he hit a homer in back-to-back games. He last performed the feat as a member of the St. Lucie Mets (Hi-A) on August 17-18, 2007 against the Jupiter Hammerheads.

HIT QUARTET: Brahiam Maldonado’s four-hit game last night was his first at the Double-A level. The performance matched a career-high which he has now done three times. His last four-hit game came on 8/2/09 against the Lakeland Flying Tigers when he was a member of the St. Lucie Mets (Hi-A). In that game, St. Lucie collected 24 hits, including four from current B-Met Reese Havens.

MANY HITS, NO WIN: The B-Mets collected 15 hits, but could not convert that into a win last night. It was the second time this year the B-Mets have racked up 15 hits in consecutive games (7/20 & 21). They are now 4-5 when picking up 15 hits or more.
