Binghamton 6, Reading 3

The B-Mets collected six extra-base hits, including home runs from Reese Havens and Brahiam Maldonado, to muscle past the Reading Phillies 6-3 in the series opener tonight at NYSEG Stadium.

Things did not look promising for Binghamton in the first. Reading collected three straight extra-base hits against B-Mets starter Brandon Moore. Ozzie Chavez launched his first home run with the R-Phils over the right field fence to put Reading up just two batters into the game.

Reading was not done in their first turn at bat at NYSEG Stadium in 2011. Steve Singleton followed Chavez with a double up the first base line. He was quickly brought home when Matt Rizzotti tattooed a 3-1 offering from Moore over the right-centerfield fence for his 20th homer of the year. It gave Reading a 3-0 lead.

The B-Mets offered a quick rebuttal with one swing of the bat. After Matt den Dekker was eliminated on a strike out-caught stealing double play, Reese Havens sent the first pitch he saw from J.C. Ramirez deep over the right field fence for his third dinger of the year.

After his rocky first inning, Moore settled down and kept Reading off the board for the rest of his time on the mound, bouncing back with a perfect, seven-pitch second inning. In the third Moore, escaped a bases-loaded situation by inducing Derrick Mitchell to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Ramirez got the first two outs of the third inning before Havens’ double off the right field fence started a game-changing rally for Binghamton. Brahiam Maldonado stepped to the plate and deposited Ramirez’s first pitch into the rail yard beyond the left field fence to tie the game at three. The drive was Maldonado’s 20th homer of the year.

Allan Dykstra kept the streak going by doubling to centerfield. He was quickly chased home on Eric Campbell’s triple to right field. After Raul Reyes was hit by a pitch, Kai Gronauer gave the B-Mets the lead for good and ended Ramirez’s night with a single to center. Chris Kissock entered from the pen and retired Moore to end the inning.

Brandon Moore posted three more scoreless innings to close out his night. He faced the minimum in the fourth before running into trouble in the fifth. The R-Phils loaded the bases, but Mitchell could not come through again, popping out to second to end the threat.

After Kissock kept the B-Mets at bay for two innings, Binghamton broke through and added insurance in the sixth. Mike Fisher pinch-hit for Moore and dunked a single into centerfield to start the frame. He was sacrificed to second on a bunt by den Dekker and advanced to third on Jon Malo’s fly out. Havens completed his strong night by driving in Fisher on a single that ricocheted off the ankle of Kissock and bounced into left field.

Given a three-run advantage, Collin McHugh made his second relief appearance as a B-Met. The righty took it to the finish line, firing three scoreless innings while racking up six strike outs along the way. McHugh ended each inning with back-to-back strike outs, including the ninth, when he froze Michael Spidale with a breaking ball to end the game.

McHugh’s second save of the season made a winner of Moore for the ninth time this year. J.C. Ramirez was saddled with his 12th loss. Derrick Loop tossed two scoreless innings to close out the tab for Reading.

Binghamton (46-67) and Reading continue their series tomorrow night. LHP Robert Carson (3-9, 4.62) will take on RHP Joseph Esposito (4-3, 4.50) with first pitch set for 7:05pm. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
