Binghamton 7, Richmond 3

The Binghamton Mets launched three home runs to defeat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-3 and take the three-game series tonight at NYSEG Stadium.

The Flying Squirrels drew first blood in the opening inning. B-Mets starter Collin McHugh plunked lead-off hitter Francisco Peguero with his third pitch to start the game. Peguero moved to second on Dusty Ryan’s passed ball, advanced to third on Charlie Culberson’s single and scored when Wendell Fairley bounced into a double play.

Binghamton was held at bay by Richmond starter Chuck Lofgren for two innings before taking the lead for good in the third. Raul Reyes led off with a single and Reese Havens walked with two outs to put two men aboard. Juan Lagares drove a payoff pitch from Lofgren over the left field fence to give Binghamton a 3-1 lead. It was his second home run as a B-Met.

The Flying Squirrels scratched out a run off McHugh in the fifth to cut the B-Mets lead to one. It was as close as Richmond would get.

Raul Reyes started the bottom of the fifth with a single to left. Allan Dykstra pinch-hit for McHugh and crushed his 15th home run off the top of the score board in right-field to kick the lead to three.

The B-Mets offense was not done in the inning. Lagares roped a two-out single to right and Brahiam Maldonado stroked his 22nd homer deep over the left field fence to make it 7-2.

Tobi Stoner took over for McHugh and allowed a pair of singles to start the sixth. Skyler Stromsmoe lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Juan Perez. It would prove to be Richmond’s final run of the night.

Stoner settled in and kept Richmond off the board in the seventh and eighth. The righty allowed one run on three hits while striking out three over three innings. Josh Stinson got the nod in the ninth and worked around a lead-off single to hurl a scoreless ninth.

McHugh picked up his fifth straight win and sixth as a B-Met. The Georgia native allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four in five innings of work. Lofgren suffered his first loss as a Flying Squirrel, allowing all seven runs on six hits in five innings. Daryl Maday and Heath Hembree combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
