The Mets “Mets Prospect List”

Everybody seems to have a prospect list and no one agrees that the other guy’s list is more accurate than your own.

But, the real list is something you never read about and that’s who is on the piece of paper that the suits in the New York Mets organization think are the future of the team.

There’s no way of knowing for sure, but the “cut-n-paste” process I go through for one of my daily features gives me an opportunity to read what the Mets brass, managers, and coaches think of the players in the organization. You then walk away with a list of players that have nothing to do with stats, ERA, or batting average. All you have is projected talent.

Remember… in the minors… you have to work on what your weaknesses are, thus, you may have to throw your weakest pitch more often than normally called for. Or, a coach may be working on a new batting stance for you and you’re playing out of position. All of this will add runs, outs, and errors which, to the fans, looks like you’re having a bad season.

Minor leaguers know who the projected stars are and this is the list I have compiled that seems to be the guys that the powers to be have decided could someday get to Queens.

In no particular order:

Pitchers: Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia, Chris Schwinden, Akeel Morris, Juan Urbina, Michael Fulmer, Luis Mateo, Rafael Montero, Cory Mazzoni, Josh Edgin

Catchers: None

First Basemen: None

Infielders: Jordany Valdespin, Ruben Tejada, Josh Satin, Zach Lutz, Wilmer Flores, Aderlin Rodriguez, Pedro Perez

Outfielders: Mike Baxter, Matt den Dekker, Cory Vaughn, Cesar Puello, Eudy Pena, Gilbert Gomez, Maikel De La Cruz

(there are others I believe have a good chance, but these are the kids "they" talk about...)

Captain Kirk? John Lujan?

Mack Ade said...

Yeah, I probably could have added Kirk to this list.

I've never heard anything said about Lugan

Interesting post, Mack. Thanks!

John Lujan??? He's a 27 year old relief pitcher. That's pretty much the opposite of a top prospect.

I defintely had Fulmer confused with someone else... he will at best start next season with St. Lucie, probably Brooklyn or Savannah

um......fernando martinez? i know he's been prone to injury but the guy is still only 22 years old and keeps on hitting. he's actually still the 3rd youngest outfielder in AAA

um.....fernando martinez? i know he's been prone to injury but the guy keeps hitting when healthy, and at 22 his career is nowhere close to done. in fact, he's still the 3rd youngest player in AAA

What about Havens? He's hurt so much it's probably hard to talk about his baseball but, when I do hear bits about him, it's always positive - like he could / should be a + fielder at 2nd.

where is steven matz the mets top pick of 2009?

Pat said...

There is no mention of Brad Holt or Reese Havens on here. Is Fernando Martinez not a prospect anymore?

Mack Ade said...

Rob:

NO ONE talks about him anymore.

The facts are... he has severe genetic arthritis that will prevent him from EVER playing in the field of a major league team again.

It doesn't matter what he does with a bat.

Shit happens.

Is it just me, or does the pitching look way more promising than the hitting?

Spaley;

Oh, it is, but that's what baseball is these days.

I try so hard not to sound too excited, but the potential of having a 2014 rotation with Wheeler, Harvey, Familia, Mejia, and Niese is simply incredible

Ian:

This post has confused some people.

It is NOT a list of Mets prospects.

It is a list of players that important people in the Mets organization talk about having a future in Queens.

Havens is definitely a Mets prospect.

Rob:

Actually, no one talks positive about F-Mart anymore, who continues to struggle with genetic problems.

Vincent:

One of the reasons no one might be talking about David this year is his continued back problems.

He is currently playing but still can't play every day.

Crush:

Matz is a prospect but, again, this is a list that certain players are being bragged about by the insiders.

Steve remains on the DL and has not pitched a professional inning in two years.
