Press Release: - St. Lucie Doubleheader

The St. Lucie Mets won both games of a double header against the Jupiter Hammerheads Wednesday night at Digital Domain Park. The sweep of the double-dip was a bit of redemption after the Mets were shutout in both games of a double header against the Hammerheads a week ago in Jupiter. St. Lucie is now 24-22 on the second half of the season and 62-54 overall.

The Mets took game one by a score of 9-2. Greg Peavey got the start for St. Lucie and tossed three shoutout innings allowing only one hit. With the game tied 1-1, the Mets put the game out of reach in the fourth inning. Pedro Zapata doubled in a run and J.B. Brown and Jefry Marte each drove in a run making it a 4-1 game. A Rylan Sandoval three-run home run an inning later gave the Mets a commanding 8-1 lead. The teams would exchange runs in the sixth inning to cap off the scoring at 9-2.

Cory Mazzoni recorded his first win with the St. Lucie Mets. Mazzoni, the Mets second round pick out of N.C. State, allowed a solo home run in his one inning of work. Rylan Sandoval led the Mets with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored including his sixth home run of the season. Juan Centeno, J.B. Brown, Travis Ozga and Pedro Zapata each had two hits in the 9-2 victory.

The Mets fell behind early in game two, but responded in a big way. Starter John Church allowed a run in the first inning but settled down to shut down the Hammerheads the rest of the way. Trailing 1-0 the Mets batted around in the bottom of the first inning sending 11 men to the plate scoring six times to give Church all the run support he would need in the Mets 9-1 win. Travis Ozga singled in two runs and Rylan Sandoval doubled in a pair in the six-run frame. Stefan Welch added his 14th home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning and Cesar Puello doubled in two runs in the third inning to go ahead 9-1.

John Church got the complete game victory tossing all seven innings allowing only one run on five hits. Church had to face only 23 batters allowing only one player to reach second base while improving to 5-2 on the season. Cesar Puello, Travis Ozga and Rylan Sandoval each had two RBI, Stefan Welch homered and scored twice and Francisco Pena had two hits, an RBI and scored twice in the 9-1 win.

The Mets and Hammerheads close out their series Thursday night at Digital Domain Park. Kyle Allen gets the start for the Mets. Allen comes in to the game with a 4-8 record and an ERA of 5.44 in 21 appearances, 16 starts. Allen has struck out 65 while walking 48 with opposing batters hitting .293 against him in 87.2 innings of work.
