FLASH: B-Mets Sold - 2012 Last Season

Report: Binghamton losing AA baseball

February, 10, 2012
The Binghamton Mets will be no more after the 2012 season, the Ottawa Citizen reports.

Beacon Sports Capital Partners is buying the Double-A team and moving it to Ottawa, according to the newspaper.

With the Mets' affiliation agreement expiring with Binghamton after 2012, it does not mean the Mets will be playing Eastern League baseball in Ottawa in '13. In fact, the report states Ottawa is likely to align with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Instead, it means the Mets will be looking for a new Double-A affiliate for the 2013 season -- like they were when they relocated from New Orleans to Buffalo for Triple-A ball for the 2009 season.

The report added that NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton will continue to have baseball in 2013, but it will be in the lower-level New York-Penn League, with a team moving from Batavia, N.Y. With the Mets' owning Brooklyn in that league, it appears the Mets' run in Binghamton at any level will end.

Mack- what are the chances that the Mets bring another team TO Binghamton? Or is this going to be a matter of a two-year deal with whomever they can find (a la New Orleans) until they can get a better deal down the road???

The Mets have a verbal deal in place to purchase the A-affiliate in Batavia, NY. I assume they can figure out sme way of getting them upgraded to AA.

The would use the current Binghamton stadium which they just signed a new deal with, I think through 2016 or 2017

Personally, I think it would be a shame if Batavia were earmarked by the Mets. That town has a long and rich tradition in the New York Penn League and the N.Y.-Ontario League before that. If I had my way, I'd leave the Muckdogs alone.

I understand there is a more recent story floating around where the owner of the B-Mets said that the team is not for sale and the Ottawa story is full of shit, hey.
