Yesterday’s
game had just about every relief pitcher nightmare, starting with the two walks
by Carlos Torres and Scott
Rice. They both gave up two runs charged to Dillon
Gee who was probably one pitch away from a whole different outcome here.
This
doesn’t have to be one of those long posts that go on and on. Frankly, there
was very little participation here on the site, either by writers or readers.
Blogger reports that the prime demographic of Mack’s Mets are Men 45-74. “We don’t
spend time ranting on Met blogs about all this crap. We just watch it and discuss
it in a timely and professional manner.
You’re
not going to see anything worse than this.
The
Mets need to find another power reliever to go along with what we saw today
from Valverde and even Parnell. I’ll say it one more time and then drop it.
Make
Rafael Montero a relief pitcher.

But I have to disagree here.
A) Montero has NO BUSINESS being turned into a reliever until he shows that he cannot hold his own at the major league level. This kid has done everything but fail so far at every level.
B) Its one game. Games are going to get blown. The trick is to not make it a habit like last year. Lets give it a few weeks before we pass judgement.

i would agree with you about making Montero a reliever if the Mets showed any.... any at all.. promise of turning the corner and being a structurally sound team.
If there were not glaring issues at shortstop, firstbase, leadoff hitter, clean-up hitter, bullpen, and now... closer.
But... this team has all of these issues and ... likely to have more issues pop up in the coming months due to the dreaded "unforeseen injury"
This team is a long shot just to be in the hunt for a wild-card spot.
No,, the team can not and should not make Montero into a relief pitcher at this point.
he has too much more value as a starter
and he is good at it.
Montero proved last year, in AAA and in his spot starts in the MLB that he is a good starter.
let him do what he is good at.
heck,, given history... they are going to need him as a starter due to injuries sooner than later
Follow the cardinals plan for success, promote these hard throwers and let them throw, keep their innings low and let's make a contender
but the cardinals plan for success does not leave glaring holes in the line-up. keep guys on the team that they identify as needing to be upgraded. and crowding a roster with 3 firstbasemen.

Agree with you on Montero, bullpen woes not his problem
Partially agree that it is one game, but the bigger issue is not the outcome of game 1. Alderson has once again assembled a poor bullpen. Now his closer is gone, maybe for a long time. He provided no legit backup with the guy coming off neck surgery, and frankly Parnell never actually closed for a complete season. Valverde was great, and I will be rooting for him, but he qualifies as a re-tread, not a legit 8th inning guy that can slide in to the closer role if needed. The antedote seems to be Farnsworth, at least for now. All he did this spring was prove he was no longer a MLBer. His LOOGYs are likely not MLB caliber with no one close on the farm. Two re-treads at the back end and two LOOGYs that are minor league talent. This is more than just the outcome of one game. This has all the hallmarks of a second rate organization that says it is serious about competing but acts in a differenct manner. And that, regardless of how "improved" the farm is, is all, 100% on the GM. Hey, at least he brought up a guy to spell Murphy that has more than 10 innings at the position in the last 5 years.
What about Walters? My brother saw him on tV this spring and was not impressed. But anyone think he should be thrown into the mix as better than Kyle F?
for whatever reason, the Mets do not have those crazy Latin guys that sit at 96.... this is a flaw in the Mets international system...
anyway, I've been in Savanna all day and I return to this Parnell shit...
fine, leave Montero alone, but you are never going to win anything until you can find a pitcher that can:
1. get a pitcher out of a jam, either in the 6th or 7th inning
2. followed by another pitcher
3. followed by another pitcher
The Mets don't have that and it's not in Vegas or Binghamton either

As of right now Walters is Edgin 2.0. Low Leverage 6th/7th inning reliever ceiling. Plus he's 27...he is what he is
