Pitcher
of the Night: Steven Matz[iv],
LHP, Mets (St. Lucie, A+): 5 2/3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K. - Matz used a fastball
that sat 93-94 and a good changeup to carve through Palm Beach hitters on
Thursday. He mixed in a hard curveball to keep hitters from both sides of the
plate honest.
This
was very interesting from Andy Martino[v]
regarding how the Mets approach playing both second base and shortstop
When a new batter
steps in, coach Tim Teufel will position the infielders from the dugout, having
read scouting reports and studied charts of where hitters tend to place the
ball. From there, it is up to the second baseman and shortstop to:
-- Look for what sign
the catcher is putting down, and where he is setting up to receive the pitch.
-- Remember where the
Mets’ pitcher typically locates that particular pitch.
-- Consider whether
that pitcher is actually hitting his spots that day.
-- Think about the
batter’s swing. Does he typically pull
the ball, slap it the other way, etc.?
-- Use all that
information to decide how much to “cheat,” or shade over in the direction that
he expects the hitter to send the ball.
-- Do all of this in
just a few short seconds.
