Kyle Johnson’s sac fly in the bottom of the tenth inning plated Cory Vaughn with the game-winning run in the Binghamton Mets’ 5-4 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium.
With the game knotted at four in the tenth, Cory Vaughn opened the inning, and put a bow on his first three-hit game of the season, with a double off the right-field wall against reliever Miguel Celestino. Dustin Lawley followed with a walk and Celestino uncorked a wild pitch to push each runner up a bag. Johnson, summoned as a pinch-hitter, lifted a 2-2 pitch deep enough to center to drive in Vaughn for Binghamton’s first walk-off win of the season.
For the first time in the series, the B-Mets struck first. Darrell Ceciliani started the first by bouncing a single through the hole on the right side against Portland starter Keith Couch. The speedy centerfielder moved from first to third on a groundout and came home with the game’s first run when Brian Burgamy rolled out to third.
Portland struck back to grab the lead in the third against B-Mets starter Greg Peavey. Shannon Wilkerson was plunked with a 1-2 pitch and Mookie Betts lifted a ground-rule to left to put two aboard. Deven Marrero tied the game with a groundout to second and Travis Shaw made it a 2-1 game by pulling an RBI single into right field.
Binghamton’s rebuttal came immediately in the third. Wilfredo Tovar singled and put himself in scoring position by stealing second with two outs. The swipe paid off as Matt Reynolds lined an RBI single to right to tie the game.
The Sea Dogs broke the tie with a pair of hits in the fifth. Wilkerson opened the inning by threading a single inside the right-field line. He stole second, took third on a fly out, and came home with the go-ahead run when Marrero lined a single between first and second against a drawn-in infield. Portland doubled their lead on a sac fly by Betts in the seventh.
Couch settled in to quiet the B-Mets offense over his final three innings. He worked around two runs in the fourth, avoided trouble after an error in the fifth and used a double play to erase a threat in the sixth.
Nate Reed inherited a two-run cushion and nearly tossed the lead away in the seventh. Xorge Carrillo pulled a double inside the third base line. Ceciliani brought him home two batters later with a single to the right-field alley. Binghamton put two aboard against Reed, but Brian Burgamy bounced into a double play to end the threat.
Binghamton needed just one pitch from Reed to tie the game in the eighth. Matt Clark blasted his first offering of the inning over the right-field wall for his fifth homer of the season. The B-Mets loaded the bases with three singles against new reliever Jose Valdez later in the inning, but could not break through with the timely hit.
Chasen Bradford (1-0) worked around singles in the ninth and tenth to post two scoreless innings of relief in the win. Celestino (0-1) surrendered the game-winning run and took the loss.
Peavey allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over a season-best seven innings in the no-decision. Couch was touched for two runs on five hits over six innings and did not factor into the decision.
