OPEN THREAD - RP Jeurys Famila

The Mets surprised Mets fans on the last night of the meetings with the return signing of relief pitcher Jeurys Familia.

The deal, pending physicals, calls for 3-years, $30mil.

Big step in the right direction. I just did a pen article to follow this up.

The first unquestionable right move by Brodie. Sign Miller and Ramos and done.

I really like this move .. still need one more arm for the pen & upgrade at catcher plus another bat with pop .. I kinda jokingly predicted that the Mets would announce a move at 3 am so call me Nostradumbass lol

Anticipate Miller del at 12mil/yr deal done today

I like that thought, Mack. Britton would be a good choice, too. I like what I saw of the kid lefty (Zamora?) last year but we need a solid vet.

good price, good term, guy how understands the pressures in nyc. Its hard to find fault with this one. well done. I would have like britton, but its hard to complain about getting better for the right amount of money.

The sales pitch was convincing Familia he was not the closer. Apparently dollar signs won over ego. I guess he's a cheaper version of David Robertson.

Reese, maybe Familia really loved being here in NYC, and this team is looking more and more like a contender and not a pretender.

It’s definitrly a team friendly deal - probably could’ve gotten more elsewhere

Reese -

Jeurys has solid promotional ties to the city that could represent 33% more bucks in his pocket over salary.

Also, never under-estimate ability to handle 'New York pressure'.

I like the move and you have to wonder if he prefers being the #2? He set up for the A's down the stretch and he should be a nice bridge in the 7th and/or 8th without the added pressure of actually closing.

I still want a LEFTY, Brodie!

Britton or Miller would fit the bill and make the pen pretty scary, in a good way (not scary like this past season).

The team was 16-26 last year in one run games.....flip that script to 26-16 and they would have been 87-75, so the improved pen is a huge step in the right direction.

Good signing.

Still though, kind of disappointing this is the only move made at the winter meetings after all of the build up and anticipation.

Just because other deals weren't finalized at the meetings, that doesn't mean they haven't been set up for further action afterwards.

Mack, I saw an article about Machado and Harper, that state and local taxes matter. NYC and NYS taxes are really only outdone by California's progressive paradise - so Chicago, for example, would save those guys multiple millions in taxes over their contracts (not like they'd ever miss the $$)

But the increased endorsements from being in NYC would have to offset that, I would think.

bgreg98180 said...

Of course that is understood.

I am just referring to expectations, and anticipation going into the meetings.

thomas, an agent will point out taxes as a reason to go to florida or texas, but a good agent will point out your marketing deals in ny/ca/il will more than make up the difference vs marketing deals in low tax states. also they do things like set you up as a pass through corp to minimize state taxes, etc. its why soccer players are always committing tax fraud.
