Tom Brennan - Grandal, Anyone?

Just some quick thoughts on Mr. Grandal...he is a switch hitter who has lots of pop (73 homers in 1,268 at bats the past 3 years), is just turning 30, and as such would be a major addition to the line up for the Mets.

The catcher happens to hits righties better than lefties.

Now, Travis d'Arnaud could be his back up, or the cheaper Kevin Plawecki.  Either taking most of their starts against lefties.

But Tomas Nido, certainly a weak hitter to date, hits lefties better than righties, and a Grandal / Nido tandem behind the dish just might work.  Nido would help in the budget department.

Of the 3, I'd prefer d'Arnaud, then Plawecki, then Nido, ignoring $$ for a minute.

Thoughts here?

Since catchers demand premium prices I might be inclined to go for a CF offensive option and give TdA one last shot

We would lose a #2 pick.

I pass.

Mack, we did great with Alonso # 2 pick. Not so sure on most of Mets' other round 2 picks. It is only a real loss if you draft well. Maybe Brodie fixes that too.

I still hope they go for Grandal. And that he is better than Grandy.

I'm still of a mind to go for Realmuto.

That Adam Smith said...

Grote, Carter, Piazza, it’s no accident that the Mets’ most successful runs have come with the best catching in their history. Grandal’a OK, but Realmuto is probably the best in the NL. I would make a strong bid for him.

Adam, Realmuto is # 1 for sure, but let's see what the price tag is relative to Grandal. Realmuto acquisition could mean a heavily stripped farm system.

At least Realmuto is 27, not in his 30's, so that would give 3-5 years of nailing down the catcher position so upper minor league talent at that position isn't needed
