Mike Puma NY Post: For a second straight night, the Mets (23-27) fell behind early, received strong relief and let their lineup go to work against an underwhelming Phillies bullpen. The Mets’ postseason chances remain thin, but they are alive as they return to Citi Field for six games against the Braves and Rays.


Metstradamus: “The Phillies played pinball with Lugo as Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, and Didi Gregorius all reached the seats to tie the game at 3-3 before Jean Segura tripled and scored to make it 4-3. The thing that struck me about Lugo was that he was throwing nothing but fastballs…It makes you wonder if this was an injury thing, or a pitch tipping thing.”


Deesha Thosar NY Daily News: “I think the guys were a little comfortable in the box against me,” Lugo said. “I made some bad pitches but I also made some good pitches that got hit too. That’s one of the things I’m not going to think too much about. Just flush it, make the adjustments I need to make.”


Newsday: “Brandon Nimmo had a tiemaking two-run triple in the sixth, then a tiebreaking homer in the ninth. That was the start of a game-winning four-run rally that included Robinson Cano's two-run homer. Pete Alonso hit his team-leading 12th homer, a solo shot in the sixth.”





Brian Joura Mets360: While the Phillies threatened mightily in both the eighth and ninth innings, the relievers contributed 7.1 scoreless innings. Justin Wilson was lucky to escape the eighth and he got the win. Edwin Diaz was lucky to escape the ninth and he got the save. Both pitchers were going for the third straight day, which isn’t ideal but in this case it was necessary.

1963

In the Polo Grounds' final game, played in front of a paltry 1,752 patrons, Jim Hickman of the Mets hits the last home run in the 52-year history of the Coogan's Bluff ballpark. The iconic stadium, which served as the home of the Giants (1911-1957), Yankees (1913-1922), and Mets (1962-63), first opened its doors on June 28, 1911.

1970

The Mets purchase Dean Chance from the Indians, but the 1964 Cy Young award winner will only compile a 0-1 record along with an ERA of 13.50 in his three games, all in relief, before being sent to Detroit, along with Bill Denehy, in an off-season trade with the Tigers. In exchange, New York obtains right-hander Jerry Robertson, who will never pitch again in a major league game.

 

1975

Mets slugger Dave Kingman, in a 7-5 victory over Chicago at Shea Stadium, hits his 35th homer to set a new franchise record for round-trippers in a season. Frank Thomas set the previous mark in 1962, the team's first year in existence.

1975

Rusty Staub becomes the first Mets player in the 14-year history of the franchise to drive in one hundred runs in a season. A two-run blast accounts for 'Le Grand Orange's' 100th RBI, which comes in a 7-5 victory over Chicago at Shea Stadium.

 

1987

In a slugfest which the Mets will lose 10-9 to Pittsburgh, Darryl Strawberry gets the team off to a good start when he slams a three-run home run off Brian Fischer in the top of the first inning at Three Rivers Stadium. The New York right fielder's round-tripper, his 37th of the season, establishes a new franchise record for homers, previously set by Dave Kingman on this date in 1975.

2006

In front of an enthusiastic Shea Stadium crowd of 46,729, the Mets capture the NL East title for the first time since 1988 by beating the Marlins, 4-0. The contest marks team's fifth attempt to clinch the division, but a road loss in Florida and being swept in Pittsburgh brought the champagne celebration home to the Big Apple.

 

2010

At Citi Field, Luis Hernandez falls to the ground in obvious pain when he fouls a ball off his right foot, and after a lengthy discussion, dismisses the team trainer to resume his turn at-bat. The Mets second baseman hits a home run on the next pitch he sees, but severely limps rounding the bases, reminiscent of Kirk Gibson, barely making it home due to the broken foot that will end his season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Baseball Reference:

1962: The Mets drop a pair to the visiting Colts .45s, 6 - 2 and 8 - 6, and also break the major-league record for homers allowed. Merritt Ranew and Dave Roberts connect for the Colts, the 188th and 189th homers allowed, breaking the A's mark set in 1956. Bob Aspromonte of the Colts sets a National League record for a third baseman with his 57th straight errorless game.

 

1976: Tom Seaver cuts down the Pirates for the second time in six days, this time winning 6 - 2 at Shea Stadium. Dave Kingman belts his 35th homer and Ed Kranepool adds another for the Mets.

Lugo gives up 4 HRs in 2 innings, and almost 2 others. Ouch.

Tired Eddie Diaz (3 games in 3 days) held on, just fanned 2 in his inning.

Nimmo gets not nearly enough respect.

Erasmo Ramirez for Cy Young.

Let's scalp some Braves this weekend (can you still say that?) I want the playoffs. Bad.

Tom - win 5 out of the next six against the Rays and Braves and then we can talk playoffs. 4 under .500 and we are talking playoffs? Manfred is lovin' the new playoff system.

John, I have never seen such a tattered Mets staff. Hitting will be their only chance of post-season.

I wonder how much of Lowrie's salary was insurance-covered. Hard to believe: 2 years at $10 million per year contract, and not ONE HIT.

I like the broadened playoffs, as long as Division winners are clearly rewarded with opening playoff advantage. Purists say no, but hockey, hoops and NFL let lots of teams in (football less so, due to the grueling nature of the game). I'd be fine going back to 154 games with expanded playoffs.

John, BTW, Lockett in Seattle? 3.1 IP, 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 K. Wilmer Font stinking it up? Anothony Kay not OK of late. Justin Dunn's last 3 outings he has been stingy with hits, but almost a walk per inning. Michael Fulmer's career has eerily paralleled that of the declining Steve Matz. Hansel Robles - little used in 2020 and for good reason: 11.20 ERA. Only Rafael Montero has done really well in 12 of his 13 outings (and in 2019 for Texas, too). And his departure from the Mets was understandable, given his lousy pitching and TJS in 2018.

Pitching is real tricky, no doubt. Except in the case of one Walker Lockett.

I thought Hansel Robles might have a downturn after Mickey Callaway was hired by the Angels. The two of them did not mix well the first time.

Re: Lugo

He is a keeper for me. Probably a starter in 2021 due lack of team depth there.

I would also offer him an extension, along with Conforto and Shreve
