Okay, if I was Sandy Alderson or Steve Cohen.
First of all, I would buy myself a huge hot fudge sundae and one of those Jerry Seinfeld's hot little convertible numbers sans the Cosmo. Go driving around awhile getting reaquainted with the NYC bright lights.
Okay, okay here goes...
I would call all the roster players into my office and re-introduce them all to the hit and run and steal bases approach to manufacturing more runs. The power and speed is already here, but they have to learn how to maximize it in the run totals each game out. Stealing bases is fun!
Next, I would begin to re-define the bullpen roles.
So far, I like Castro and Diaz the best, with Gsellman and Familia in th rumble seat, so to speak. There are also a couple of MiLB relievers down at AAA available for a ST look. I bring them in early to ST and let Hefner, Johnny Franco, and maybe Bartolo Colon work some with them on their mechanics and mindset.
After that, I would start pouring through other teams young starters who "could be available via ta trade", both at the MLB and the MiLB AAA levels. I would assume here that the Noah injury could be a potentially tricky returning in the timetable area, because each pitcher (having had that surgery)can be different healing.
The acquisition of another young starter initially for insurance, would happen via trade and definitely not FA, where it is too thin. I would pass this time on Marcus Stroman. We will need a little bit more here if Noah has a set-back in his return.
Next, I would sniff around to find a new young catcher to go with Tomas Nido.
My preference right now would be Ryan Jeffers from the Twins or someone similar to him. Some good teams have a second string catcher who is young and should eb starting. Jeffers is big, strong, and still on the upswing. But I might also inquire some about the "Lost Boy" on the Yankees, Gary Sanchez. I think he can be fixed.
There you have it.
Pitching being the team's weak suit at 2020 end, is now a strength again as it should always have been. I didn't bring in any older fading deadwood players, instead using that money allocation for higher octane players the team really needs.
Catcher just got younger and deeper. And I kept the majority of my best young fielders/hitters together for another major run at the roses in 2021.
Gotta' go now. Cigars and a convertible ride waiting for me downstairs! Just don't have the blonde yet, but working on it!
