It marked the first time in franchise history the Mets had three straight starting pitchers record at least 10 strikeouts in a game. But the Mets won only David Peterson’s start.

The Mets traded prospects Blake Taylor and Kenedy Corona for the 29-year-old Jake Marisnick, who received just 33 at-bats and appeared in just 16 games as a Met. Taylor, meanwhile, has pitched well out of the bullpen for the Astros, notching a 2.41 ERA over 18 ²/₃ innings with 16 strikeouts.


Newsday: Luis Rojas: Dellin Betances hid lat injury from Mets for a month. Manager Luis Rojas said Betances, who has been on the injured list with right lat tightness since Aug. 30, revealed to team officials at the time he was sidelined that he had been dealing with a lat issue since he pitched in Boston — one month and one day earlier.

Joel Sherman NY Post: Steve Cohen’s first big Mets move could end with Van Wagenen bolting. “Van Wagenen would have to decide if he is staying or not since one item that made the Mets GM job attractive for him is a long-standing relationship with and direct access to Jeff Wilpon.” Joel goes on to discuss another potential Mets GM - Dave Dombrowski.

Al Jackson suffers his 20th loss of the season when Chicago beats the Mets at the Polo Grounds, 8-2. The New York southpaw joins Roger Craig in reaching the dubious number of defeats, making the pair the first teammates since Bucky Walters and Joe Bowman of the 1936 Phillies to become 20-game losers on the same National League team.

1988

The Mets clinch their fourth NL East title when Ron Darling goes the distance, defeating Philadelphia at Shea Stadium, 3-1. The Amazins also copped the division flag in 1969, 1973, and 1986.


 

1998

John Olerud ties Barry Bonds' National League record of reaching base 15 consecutive times when he walks in the first inning. The Mets first baseman will groundout in the third, falling one short of the 1957 major league mark set by Ted Williams.

 

2000

Mets' closer Armando Benitez blanks the Phillies in the ninth for his 39th save, breaking southpaw John Franco's club record. The left-handed bullpen veteran also appeared in the Mets' 9-6 win.

2003

For only the third time in major league history, a Korean pitcher and a Japanese pitcher oppose one another as Expos' hurler Tomo Ohka faces Jae Weong Seo as starters at Shea Stadium. 1986: The New York Mets defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 5 - 2, at Shea Stadium. The Mets' Wally Backman, on his 27th birthday, hits his only home run of the season.


2008 - The Mets fall to one game up in the wild card race, losing 9 - 5 to the Cubs. Chicago clinches home field advantage for the playoffs. Pitcher Jason Marquis hits a grand slam and drives in 5 in the win. It is the second grand slam by a pitcher off New York hurlers this year, the first team since the 1977 Cubs to allow two such slams. Jon Niese takes his first major league loss.

 

2011: The Cardinals blow a 6 - 2 9th-inning lead in losing to the Mets, 8 - 6. SS Rafael Furcal misplays a potential double play grounder to start New York's six-run outburst. Jason Motte walks three batters - who all score - and Marc Rzepczynski is charged with the loss. The loss is only St. Louis's third over their last 16 games and they are 2 games back of Atlanta in the National League wild card race.

Jake - poor Jake - glad we have him - but this team doesn't deserve him.

I really believe that Alonso let the glitz and the glamour get the best of him this season.

Last season he was an unknown. This year the analytic guys had tons of material to study regarding what he swings at.

He needs to take the 'face of the team' mask off this off-season and get back to a proper training schedule.

The amazing thing is that Jake has just 70 wins for his career so far. If he get into the Hall of Fame he will have the fewest wins by a starter - by far.

I get into Alonso at 8:00 AM, Jake a bit too, and the Mets as a whole. I'm tired of waiting. Day after day watching playoff caliber teams expose this team's shortcomings.

Some Good Points Today To Read

I disagree with most however, contrarian that I am. Here's some other thoughts.

1. Tom, math is nice if you want to build a cement boat, but I will go with basic common baseball sense anytime. That can be what is sometimes missing here or I have noticed.

i.e. All these old CF's (and every season a new one) brought in to supposedly shore up CF with a younger and better guy already there. My God, please stop this insanity.

The ushering in of every geriatric catcher left standing (without crutches or a contract) to platoon with another old catcher with even more sore knees.

Bringing in ("down side" and maybe banged up as well) over 30 year old starting pitchers for way too much money, when that same money "could have been used" to get just one really good younger number 3 starter instead. This has gone on here since there were apple trees really. I would need a super computer to list all of their names. Last contract older starters coming here is like getting another social security benefit or something.

2. Pete Alonso has one simple batting issue, he wants a homerun every frickin' single time up. He's like Jake deGrom wanting every pitch to go perfectly to the catcher. It's unreasonable, but a nice thought.

But then again true, who wouldn't want a homerun if you looked like if you looked like Pete Alonso! However, it's kind of strangling his OBP and BA. Maybe just having someone sit him down (like Todd, David, or Luis) and explain this to him might help. Pete, you don't have to be this team's Hulk Hogan. You have a whole really good team around you now.

But what I might consider also doing is tell him this, "For every homerun you hit, it's a $10,000 fine payable to your favorite choice of charities."

What? Are you kidding me? No more homeruns for Pete Alonso? That's an Alonso sacrilege. A disgrace to homeruns everywhere! An utter injustice to baseball! Already even! (Snaggle Puss)

A: Yes. Maybe so. But just for awhile until the rest of his offensive game has clicked in better for him and he totally gets it. But it's simple. He has to learn how to make solid/smooth contact for other basehits, like for singles and doubles. He cannot keep smashing homerun moonshots and batting .210 BA. The moonshots are sweet, gorgeous actually, but if you have been around long enough you remember guys here like Dave Kingman, Brandon Jacobs, and Lastings Milledge too. This is the path that Pete is currently on. And he has got to try to develop the rest of his offensive game soon. It's really just a mental widening in his approach. Singles can win games too!

Can he?

A: Absolutely. Pete is an amazing ball player and person. Who could help him with this? Todd, David or Chilli. It will require some work, but it absolutely can be done. It's very simple, we want and need Pete here a long, long time.

Take your average big league hitter who is in a batting slump. What do they normally tend to do?

A: Break their swing down to basic fundamentals, and just make smooth and solid contact on the ball. Adding the power comes after this step one. The result is refreshing. Singles are abundant, the swing smooths out, the batter gains a new perspective. The birds fly, the tides break, and the sun comes out.

Just my opinion and I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time though.
