Daily News: Michael Wacha, in what was very likely his last start as a Met,
surrendered four earned runs (two home runs) across six innings in the Mets'
8-5 loss to the Rays on Wednesday. The Mets lineup only managed to put two base
runners on against Tampa Bay righthander Tyler Glasnow. Dominic Smith and
Andres Gimenez hit solo shots off the righty, though.

Newsday:
Randy Arozarena’s two-run homer in the sixth off Michael Wacha snapped a 2-2
tie. Brandon Lowe’s two-run homer in the eighth off Chasen Shreve gave the Rays
a four-run cushion, which later became a six-run cushion after Arozarena went
deep again off Steven Matz in the ninth.

Brian Joura Mets360: “Wacha is not going
to be a New York Met in 2021…Why he was given a start over anyone who had a
whiff of a hint of a long shot of a chance of being on next year’s team is
simply inexplicable and inexcusable.”
Metstradamus:
Look, I’m just glad the Mets didn’t blow
a 9-1 lead. Maybe that’s still coming.
Mets.com:
Technically, the Mets are not mathematically eliminated, though that can occur
as soon as Thursday. The Mets’ most direct remaining path to the playoffs
involves them winning four straight games in Washington this weekend and having
the Phillies and Marlins both lose all their remaining games. It is
mathematically possible, but exceedingly unlikely.

Vaccaro NY Post: Mets missing playoffs is one of biggest failures in team
history. “But in a year when eight out of 15 National League teams would
qualify for the playoffs, they absolutely should have figured out a way to make
the postseason tournament. That they won’t is among the most abject failures in
the team’s history, and that particular list isn’t exactly a short one.”

Eastern Title.
1968 |
Mets manager Gil Hodges, during a
game against the Braves in Atlanta, suffers a mild heart attack. The New York
skipper, who will die of a massive coronary in 1972, is hospitalized until
October 20, when doctors give him a clean bill of health, but warned him
about the continued risks of stress and smoking. |
1969 |
In the inaugural season of
divisional play, the Mets clinch the first-ever National League East title.
Gary Gentry fires a four-hitter, blanking the Cardinals, 6-0, in front of a
frenzied Shea Stadium crowd, which spills onto the field en masse after the
game to celebrate their team's amazing accomplishment. |
1991 |
With his 37th homer of the season,
Howard Johnson establishes a new NL record for round-trippers by a
switch-hitter when he goes deep off Bob Walk in the Mets' 10-8 loss to
Pittsburgh at Shea Stadium. HoJo, who will extend the mark, finishing the
season with 38 home runs, had set the previous mark in 1987. |
2011 |
Dillon Gee becomes the first Mets
rookie to win 13 games in a season in 27 years when New York defeats
Washington, 6-3. In 1984, Dwight Gooden compiled a 17-9 record as a freshman
in 31 starts for the team. |
1971: Honored in pregame ceremonies at Shea Stadium by New York Congressman
Herman Badillo and Puerto
Rican Senate President Rafael Hernandez Colon, Roberto Clemente responds by driving in
the first and last runs in the Pirates' 3 - 2 win over New York. Willie Stargell provides the second run
with his 47th homer, tying him with Atlanta's Hank Aaron for
the league lead. Centerfielder Mike Jorgensen is the Mets' offense,
answering Clemente's 1st-inning RBI single with one of his own and Stargell's
6th-inning solo shot with his own bases-empty blast in the bottom of the 7th.
Immediately thereafter, however, Clemente doubles in the go-ahead run. This
time, the Bucs wise up; when they walk Jorgensen in the 9th, the Mets cannot
capitalize.
1975 - Tom Seaver's
bid for a no-hitter is again spoiled in the 9th by a little-known Cub batter.
This time it is Joe Wallis who
lines a two-out single in the 9th for Chicago's first hit. Seaver retires the
next hitter, but there is no score through nine innings. The Cubs tally two
more hits in the 10th, but fail to score. When Skip Lockwood relieves Seaver in the
11th, Chicago finally scores to win, 1 - 0.

The Mets have once again started the Final Countdown.
Macks' plan (to get Bauer, Springer, and 2 quality relievers) would help - but why would they want to come to this perennially floundering (and one could say jinxed) franchise?
I agree with Brian.
Starting someone that isn't going to be on your team next year is downright stupid.
By the way, where is E. Ramirez?
Tom
The FA agents will perk up when Cohen and his fat paycheck takes over.
I remember what an ex-Mets minor league pitcher told me when he signed with Scott Boras to be his agent.
He said "I don't want to see the banners in your bedroom or know who you root for. You sign with me, you go where I work out a deal with".
The agents hated the Wilpons.
That changes day one with Cohen.
Mack, the agents are going to love Alderson, LOL.
I’m sorry to hear Boras is in effect running the player instead of representing him.
