1964

The Cubs overcome making five errors in the top of the third inning and beat the Mets, 4-2. The Chicago miscues, that include shortstop Andre Rodgers and catcher Dick Bertell each committing two and first baseman Ernie Banks contributing to the total by dropping a pop fly, account for all of New York's scoring in the Wrigley Field contest.

1969

At Wrigley Field, Bill Hands and the Cubs edge Tom Seaver and the Mets, 1-0. After the game's last out, Ron Santo jumps up and clicks his heels for the first time, a move the third baseman will repeat each time Chicago wins for the rest of his career.

2001

Bobby Valentine wins his 1,000th career game as a manager when Glendon Rusch and closer Armando Benitez combine to throw a one-hitter in the Mets' 2-0 victory over the Red Sox. Trot Nixon's first-inning bunt single, a result of the New York starter's inability to cover first base, is Boston's only hit in the Shea Stadium contest.

Baseball Reference:

1969: At Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs top the New York Mets, 1 - 0, to give Bill Hands (11-7) the win over Tom Seaver (14-4). Billy Williams singles home the winner, boosting the Cubs lead to 5 1/2 games. After the last out, Ron Santo jumps up and clicks his heels, igniting a roar from the crowd. The Mets think it's bush.

1972: In his first major league game, Dave Schneck hits a 2-run homer off the Padres' Steve Arlin that turns out to be the game winner in the Mets' 3 - 2 win at San Diego Stadium.

1988: Ken Griffey singles for his 2,000th career hit in the Atlanta Braves' 9 - 8 loss to the New York Mets.

1989 - The New York Mets' Sid Fernandez strikes out 16 Atlanta Braves, but the portly Polynesian portsider still loses, 3 - 2, on Lonnie Smith's leadoff home run in the bottom of the 9th.

Just saw Szapucki out for season with ulnar realignment surgery. So the oft-injured one started his MILB career in 2015 and has totaled 187 innings. How nuts is that?

Who is next on the call up chart for Mets minors starters now? Kumar Rocker?

Proud of Taijuan Walker - who actually pitches, and pitches well.

JD Davis is very ready - call him up and put his live bat at 3rd base. Villar back to part time.

John From Albany said...

Mets need JD's bat. I think they will try to find at bats for Villar as well. Maybe at the expense of McNeil?

- What does “transferred to complex” mean for Quinn Brodey?

- McNeil has been the Mets hottest hitter in July. Davis needs to hit cleanup and get Alonso down to #6 where he belongs.

- Why is Cespedes not playing somewhere? I mean, Lowrie found a home…

John From Albany said...

Good questions Gus - I think Brody was transferred to the complex to try and work with him on stuff to try and get him going. Otherwise, he would have just been released.

Robert Stock impressed in his start in the DH last week, and again at 'Cuse this week. I' d say he's next, but Carrasco will hopefully get here before we need to bring anyone up.

John From Albany said...

Bill, I saw Stock pitch up close in Syracuse. Consistently hit 97 on the radar but lost control one inning. Otherwise, he looked good indeed.

Tom Brennan said...

Is Stock's FB too straight? Can he get MLB hitters out with that stuff?

One thing I do know - unlike Tom Szapucki, who turned pro 7 years ago and has 187 total innings, at least Stock pitches. Szapucki is the pitcher in name only. Of course, he could go to Seattle next year and win 15 games.
