1969

After being swept in a three-game series by Houston at the Astrodome, the eventual World Champion Mets fall ten games behind the front-running Cubs in the first-ever NL East race. The third-place New York team will finish the season at a torrid 39-11 pace, finishing the season eight games in front of Chicago.

2003

After missing nearly three months with a groin injury, Mike Piazza makes a dramatic return to the New York lineup when he homers and drives in five runs on Italian Night at Shea Stadium. The backstop's 3-for-5 performance, including a home run in the third inning, RBI single in the fourth, and a two-run single in the seventh, contributes to the Mets' 9-2 victory over the Giants.

In the Pete Alonso vs. Dom Smith at first base debate, Pete did something Dom couldn't - he leaped and caught Villar's errant throw to turn the DP. That ball sails over Dom's glove.

If you missed what Mariano Duncan is saying about Ronny Mauricio - don't. Effusive praise.

I am going to be annoyingly persistent here. Pete just missed 2 HRs the last 2 days. His walk off homer barely made it. Villar's 2 run HR barely made it. Many times of the year, NONE of those balls make it. Just 8 of Pete's 25 HRs are at home. So...

...MOVE THE FENCES IN AGAIN.

To help Stroman hydrate, have a coach handing him a water bottle on the bench. Remember back in Seaver's time, a lot more hot day games - and a lot more complete games. I guess they hydrated just fine.

But...great OF catch by Dom, though.

I actually remember Matlock having a problem with dehydration one game.

Tom - you see Juan Soto's Citi Field numbers that I included yesterday? He says the fences are just fine.
