Press Release: Tortugas Clip St. Luice Mets 2-1

Brodey homers for only St. Lucie hit

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 31, 2021) – The Daytona Tortugas clipped the St. Lucie Mets 2-1 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday night (Box Score).

Daytona scored a run in the first inning on a bases loaded infield single by Ivan Johnson. Brandon Leyton led off the second inning for Daytona with a double and he scored on a ground out by Daniel Vellojin two batters later to make it 2-0.

The Mets were being no-hit through 6.1 innings until Quinn Brodey launched a 410-foot home run off Frainger Aranguren for the Mets only hit and run.

Warren Saunders and Jaylen Palmer worked walks in the eighth inning but Tortugas reliever Nick Hanson quelled the rally by striking out Omar De Los Santos to end the inning.

Hanson pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game for his first save.

Tortugas starter Jose Franco walked the first two batters of the game but then struck out 11 consecutive Mets. The Mets put their first ball in play with two outs in the fourth when Alexander Ramirez flew out to right field.

Franco pitched 4.0 hitless innings with two walks and 11 strikeouts. He threw 63 pitches.

Aranguren pitched the next 3.1 inning to get the win.

Mets starter David Griffin overcame a rocky start to pitch 5.0 solid innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Drake Nightengale and Luis Montas combined for 3.0 hitless innings with six strikeouts for the Mets bullpen.

The two teams combined to strike out 26 times, a new record for a Mets nine-inning game.

The Mets (40-37) and Tortugas (38-39) play their series finale at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Sunday at 5:35 p.m.
