Mack - Draft Thoughts: Jud Fabian, Reggie Crawford, Bryce Osmond, Tucker Toman, Dalton Rushing

9-9-21 - Prospects Live - 2022 MLB DRAFT - TOP 150 PROSPECTS -

33 Jud Fabian

OF Florida  Ocala, FL

After being projected a Top 5 pick a year prior to the 2021 MLB Draft, Fabian stumbled a bit in his sophomore campaign, exhibiting more of the same swing-and-miss concerns that had plagued him during his freshman season. That said, the strikeout rates did improve as his spring progressed. Ultimately, he ended up being selected at the top of the second round by the Boston Red Sox, though he elected not to sign, returning to Florida for his age-21 season. The tools across the board are significant. Fabian has at least plus raw power, and he's an above average centerfielder with above average speed. Teams want to see the swing and miss woes improve in 2022 should he hope to hear his name called toward the top of the draft.

16. Jud Fabian, OF, Florida

Fabian entered 2021 as a projected top-10 pick but had a streaky season, batting .249/.364/.560 with 20 homers (eighth in D-I) and 79 strikeouts (third) before failing to sign with the Red Sox as a second-round choice. He still offers some of the best right-handed power available and gets the job done in center field with solid speed and a strong arm.

Mack's spin -

The draft world is not that excited about the return of Fabian like I am. Yes, the baseball world has seen two different versions of this guy, but I expect a return of the good guy to surface in the spring.

Currently on my board - a conservative 5th outfielder.

9-9-21 - Prospects Live - 2022 MLB DRAFT - TOP 150 PROSPECTS -

28 Reggie Crawford

1B/LHP          UConn

2021 Univ. Connecticut stat line -

51-G, 210-AB, .295/.349/.543, 13-HR

6-games, 1-start, 1-1, 2.35, 7.2-IP, 17-K, 3-BB

Frackville, PA There may not be a more exciting player in college baseball than Reggie Crawford. It's a legit lefty bat with easy plus raw power, maybe more. He's getting into it in games too. The hit tool just about matches the juice too. There's some swing and miss here, and Crawford is generally reluctant to take his walks, but the bat-to-ball skills on pitches in the zone is impressive. It doesn't stop there. Crawford has been clocked as high as 101mph from the mound with a banger slider that tunnels the heater really well. The pipedream of Crawford smoking an 8th inning bomb to take the lead, followed by him blowing would-be batters away in the 9th inning is something scouts are salivating over. He's one of the most dynamic players in college baseball and figures to be a high draft pick depending on what scouts see his role being at the next level.

                5. Reggie Crawford, LHP, Connecticut

Crawford slugged 13 homers this spring but excites scouts much more on the mound, where he has shown huge upside in glimpses at Connecticut as well as with Team USA and in the Cape League this summer. A physical 6-foot-4 left-hander, he struck out 30 of the 56 batters he faced at those three stops in 2021, averaging 96 mph and touching 100 with his fastball while also mixing in a power slider that hit 88 mph. If he can hold up as a starter, continue to throw strikes and develop an offspeed pitch, he could vault to the top of this list.

Mack's spin -

Crawford has the potential to be your cleanup hitter and come to the mound in the 9th and close out your win.

Very exciting prospect. Just wish he played for a better school in a tougher division.

Currently on my board - 7th second baseman and 3rd potential closer.

9-6-21 - BA - Top Cape Prospects 25-50  -

36. Bryce Osmond, RHP, Chatham (Third-year sophomore, Oklahoma State)

Osmond was the top-ranked player in the 2019 draft class not to sign and instead brought premium upside to Oklahoma State. He’s struggled to find consistency for the Cowboys and this spring went 2-5, 7.42. He had a better summer with Chatham, going 1-2, 4.21 with 26 strikeouts and 11 walks in 21.1 innings.

Osmond, listed at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, is an excellent athlete. His fastball sits in the low 90s and touches 95 mph and he works from a good downhill angle. He has a full array of secondary offerings—changeup, curveball and slider—but his slider is the best of the group and can be a swing-and-miss pitch. His changeup and curveball will need more development to become quality weapons. His control also needs refinement, but his athleticism gives reason to believe he’ll be able to make the adjustments. Osmond offers significant upside, but still has rough edges to his game.

2021 Oklahoma State stats - 13-G, 10-starts, 2-5, 7.42, 57-IP, 67-K, 33-BB

 Mack's spin -

Early mocks had Osmond as the top righty in this draft, but I have him as my 6th, based on potential, not results yet.

9-1-21 - MLB - Top high school prospects for '22 Draft

15. Tucker Toman, 3B, Hammond HS (S.C.)

College commitment: Louisiana State

A switch-hitter who has a good baseball IQ and is a decent athlete, Toman’s left-handed swing might be right behind Johnson’s in terms of pure hit tool, with some wondering if he might be better suited to stick to hitting from that side only. His hands and feel work defensively, but he might be better off at second base because of his natural arm slot when throwing.

 Mack's spin -

Currently my 5th third baseman.

8-30-21 - Prospects Live - Top 50 Cape Prospects -

31. DALTON RUSHING, 1B/DH

LOUISVILLE (2022): BOURNE BRAVES

Hit Power Arm Field Run FV

30/50 30/55 55/55 30/30 30/30 4

Drives the ball to all fields. Raw power translates in game. Patient hitter works counts. Strong athlete with strength through entire body. Future position in the field remains a question. Struggles at receiving and blocking behind the plate. Played primarily 1B/DH in the Cape. Profiles as a 1B/DH prospect in pro-ball.

2021 Louisville stat line - 142-AB, .314/.401/.542, 6-HR

Mack's spin -

Rushing has a nice all-bat stat line but is a little short for a first baseman.

Teams don't draft first basemen that can't find the fences.

My current board - 8th first baseman.

Jud will be definitely around when we pick in Round 1 and Reggie will still be around in Round 2.
