OPEN THREAD - The DH

Let's move on to positions, starting with the "designated hitter" (DH).

The assumption here is that there will be one in 2022 for National League teams.

If that comes to be... what would is your plan here?

One main hitter? A platooned combo? Someone from outside the organization?

Take it away...

Depends on whether they can dump Cano's contract or not. Otherwise, he is your primary DH, and you might as well trade Smith unless Cano is cut loose.

Smith and Alonso would be a fine DH/1B tandem.

I basically agree with Tom........roster construction will dictate this position. In other words, I don't think they should go out and secure someone to be the DH. Instead, once all of the player movement shakes out over the Winter, the DH should be a convenient spot to put an extra bat and it may very well rotate depending upon the day/opponent in 2022.

I like Pete at 1B, so he stays put if I am in charge..........not sure if Dom and/or Davis will be here next year, but they would have been your primary DH's this year, IMO.

Due to $$$, Cano seems to be a safe bet to be on the roster in 2022, so he gets my early vote (unless he can play 3B, but that is a different article).

First you have to see how Cano does at 3B since McNeil and Davis are not good there and Villar is not guaranteed to be back. If he looks competent, then go with him there and move Davis (if he's still around) into the DH role. I foresee McNeil at 2B and Smith in LF. Nimmo is in CF. It's anybody's guess who is in right.

Pete is a awful 1b, He should be your DH.
I actually think we should consider Platooning Cano and JD at 1b and not at 3rd base.

3b belongs to one of the kids (veintos, baty, Maricio) and i would bring one of them up 1 month into the season so we can earn the extra year control if that is still the collective rule.

Pete isn't a great defensive player, for sure.........but would his bat suffer if he isn't involved in the game? DH is a weird spot, sort of like 4 or 5 pinch hitting opportunities per game (if that makes sense). I think his offense more then compensates for his defensive shortcomings.

I am also skeptical that using Davis and Cano (platoon) at first would be an upgrade defensively? Davis is pretty scary with the glove and I don't think Cano has played much first base.....interesting idea Eddie, but I would prefer to leave Pete alone and see if we can get something out of Cano at 3B (until one of the kids is ready or Cano's contract runs out).

I do Alonso and Smith 1b and they split time at DH, Baez 2b, Lindor SS, Cano 3b with Nimmo CF and McNeil RF and trade Davis for what you can get. The added bat will be for LF just so we don't lose a draft pick on QOer player. I don't want to see Smith or McNeil do a "Murphy" on us so I'm giving them a pass on this year and hope for a rebound in 22' and that gives Maurcio, Baty, Alverez and Ginn another year to develope to hopefully see them in Sept. The pitching must be addressed so work out short term deal with Noah (or QOer) and I don't see a real viable alternative to Stroman as they'll be a feeding frenzy on pitching this off season so make the deal. I can live with Jake, Noah (fingers crossed) Stro, CC, Megil, Peterson etc. After Loup I'll leave the BP to you guys.

Lesson learned in 2021 is changes are necessary. Start by moving JD, Dom and Villar. If any of these three are on the team next year, we are in trouble.

Eddie, Vientos is to me the only one of that trio to be ready one month into 2022. But the kids are coming, soon, and that complicates decisions too.

Eddie, in a resumed suspended game today, first AB…HR. He may be ready right now.

Dom Smith and Pete Alonso should split DN and 1B next year with both getting ABs in both roles.

What if there isn’t a DH? I’d be cool with that.
