Mack - 2022 MLB Draft Scouting Report - OF - Gavin Cross

Gavin Cross

OF          Virginia Tech

2021 - VT stat line - 51-G, 203-AB, .345/.415/.621/1.036, 11-HR, 48-K

Mack's spin -

Cross is a very talented outfielder that put up a sick stat line last year for VT.

Make no doubt about it... Cross is a bat first prospect, though he does have a powerful arm.

My board: 8th OF

10. Gavin Cross, OF, Virginia Tech

After batting .345/.415/.621 during the spring, Cross was the U.S. collegiate national team's best hitter in intrasquad play and went 4-for-11 in a three-game series against the U.S. Olympic team. A 6-foot-3, 210-pound athlete, he possesses at least average tools across the board, the best of which are his hitting ability and power from the left side of the plate and a plus arm that enhances his right-field profile.

Plus raw power. Above average bat to ball skills.  Gets on plane and looks to drive the ball in the air to his pull side. Home runs over doubles profile.  Athletic defender in OF. Ranges well gap to gap in CF. Profiles as corner OF in pro-ball.

8-30-21 - 2021 USA Baseball College National Team Top MLB Draft Prospects -

8. Gavin Cross, OF, Virginia Tech

Cross was among the breakout stars in college baseball in 2021, hitting .345/.415/.621 with 13 doubles, five triples and 11 home runs. He built on that success by establishing himself as the CNT’s most consistent hitter during the course of the intrasquad scrimmage schedule. He hit .455/.474/.879 with four home runs in those 11 games, and was the only player to have a hit in all three games against the Olympic team.

Over the last six months, Cross has shown himself to be one of the best hitters in college baseball, and his summer with the CNT cemented his place among the elite prospects for the 2022 draft, with he and LSU’s Barry emerging as the two biggest all-around threats at the plate as the summer wore on. Defensively, he isn’t a standout outfielder, but his skills and power bat fit him into a right field profile.

Former Tennessee High standout Gavin Cross went from a local hero to a national name after playing with the US College Team this summer.

The successful summer mixed with his progress at Virginia Tech in the spring helped the outfielder be named one of Baseball America’s Top 50 College Prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft Monday.

The former Viking came in at No.14 on the list with Cross finishing with a .431 average, 14 RBI’s and four homeruns this summer for the Stars and Stripes. These type of numbers shouldn’t come to a surprise after he hit .345, 11 homers and 35 RBI’s in the spring with the Hokies.

26 Gavin Cross OF Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech isn't the kind of school you would expect to produce a potential first round talent, but it's hard to ignore what Gavin Cross brings to the table. He's been a menace at the top of the Hokies lineup throughout his career, ending 2020 with a .369 batting average and following that up with another big 2021 campaign. He uses all fields at the plate with big bat speed and has shown some good power to all fields as well. In the field, he's manned right field for a majority of the season for the Hokies, where he's shown off a plus arm. He could find himself as the first Virginia Tech player drafted in the first round since Joe Saunders went 12th overall in 2002.
