Mack - Draft Thoughts: Adam Maier, Clark Elliot, Jimmy Crooks, Kyle Russell, Chase Shores

8-24-21 - @eccentricladdie

Here's a minute of arguably the best breaking ball in the 2022 draft (yes, I'm that confident a year out lol)

Adam Maier's SL is one of the best I've seen at the amateur level. Ridiculously high spin/high spin eff combo w/ good velocity for the sweep

45% SL CSW on the Cape

2020 UBC stat line - 5-G, 2-ST, 3-0, 2.84, 19-IP, 22-K, 4-BB

Mack's spin -

Maier is REALLY  making a name for himself early this mock season.

I love everything I have read about him and can't wait to see what he will do this season for UBC.

Very hard to figure out where to place him on my board right now. For now, he's my 34th RHP.

 9-9-21 - Prospects Live - 2022 MLB DRAFT - TOP 150 PROSPECTS -

94 Clark Elliott

OF

Michigan

Barrington, IL Elliott is a slappy hitter with some sneaky pop that continues to develop as he gets comfortable in Big 10 play. Elliott gets really high marks for his approach at the plate and his ability to draw walks, limiting strikeouts. He's a threat on the basepaths, though the Wolverines don't tend to run as much as some other programs. In the field, Elliott is a plus runner with good instincts and an average arm that, for our money, best projects in left field at the next level.

 WEST - DH

 Clark Elliott (Michigan)

Hyannis didn't have a lot of bright spots this summer, but Michigan outfielder Clark Elliott emerged as the biggest on-base threat in the league. The Harbor Hawks leadoff hitter recognizes spin very well, and even when fooled has quick wrists that can get the bat-to-ball. Elliott returns to campus this fall looking to add more power to his game, which would really solidify him as a model darling and potential top 100 selection in the 2022 draft.

2021 Michigan stat line - 43-G, 152-AB, .270/.403/.428, 5-HR

Mack's spin -

Elliot has a ways to go to become even a second day pick.

For now, my 22nd outfielder.

9-9-21 - Prospects Live - 2022 MLB DRAFT - TOP 150 PROSPECTS -

118 Jimmy Crooks

C

Oklahoma

Euless, TX Crooks spent a year at McLennan College before transferring to the Sooners. He picked up right where he left off. Crooks can hit, and he limits his strikeouts too. Behind the plate, he's an average defender with an average arm. The profile points toward a hit-first backstop with the ability to stick back there as a potential platoon bat, though that ceiling could elevate if the bat continues to tick up.

8-22-21 -

Mack -  I have Kevin Parada, Logan Tanner, and Hayden Dunhurst as my top three catchers here. Am missing anyone?

Daniel Susac is almost assuredly a better offensive prospect than Tanner or Dunhurst. Matt Wieters kind of player. Keep an eye on Johnathan French at Clemson and Jimmy Crooks at Oklahoma

2021 Oklahoma stat line: 54-G, 223-AB, .287/.385/.502, 10-HR

 Mack's spin -

I don't currently have Crooks in my top five catchers, but that doesn't mean he can't get there after a good 2022 season.

For now, he's 7th on my board.

 8-16-21 - Prospects Live - Pacific Northwest Prospects -

KYLE RUSSELL

Second Base Washington State

One of the highest recruited preps out of the state of Washington in 2020, Russell is once again draft-eligible as a second-year sophomore. He will be just 20 years old in July. Russell is a very good defender up the middle with very soft hands and an average arm for the position. He may ultimately end up at second base because of the arm strength. The bat to ball skills are pretty good here, though scouts want to see more thump in the bat and impact on the offensive side of the ball. Much of that must come from weight and strength gains.

2021 Washington State stat line - 20-G, 73-AB, .301/.311/.466, 1-HR

Mack's spin -

This is the only ink I have so far on Russell.

We will keep an eye on him.

9-9-21 - Prospects Live - 2022 MLB DRAFT - TOP 150 PROSPECTS -

85 Chase Shores

RHP Lee Midland, TX

Despite his size, Shores has extreme athleticism on the mound with fluidity, rhythym and a feel for pitching. Projects to start, especially as he continues to get stronger. Shores is already up to 97 with steep angle and he attacks the zone. Shores offers a short curveball that has taken definitive strides in the last calendar year, and now features a changeup he can spot to LHH with arm speed and some separation. Shores is a high-watch and is opening eyes.

Chase Shores

As they say, everything's bigger in Texas. This includes the pitchers. At 6’8”, 240 pounds, Chase Shores has a large, imposing frame on the mound and he’s become a very intriguing prospect in this class. At his height, there’s plenty of moving parts in his delivery, but he’s still able to throw a high-spin fastball at 91-96 MPH and topped out at 97 MPH with late life from a low three-quarters slot. He’s got a 1-to-7 curveball in the high-70’s that is his primary secondary that he went to frequently in game. He did flash a good change-up with late diving action, but he only threw one in his outing at 84 MPH. He’s far more comfortable throwing strikes in the wind-up than in the stretch, which will need to be ironed out as time progresses. However, the stuff is loud and he’s an interesting follow for 2022.

Mack's spin -

This is the second and third ink we have on the guy with the great name.

Currently my 16th RHP.
