St. Lucie beats Lakeland 5-2 on Sunday
PRESS RELEASE: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (Sept. 12, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets snapped a season-long six-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Clover Park (Box Score).
Three Mets pitchers – Kolby Kubichek, Luis Moreno and Grant Hartwig – combined to induce four double plays and keep the Flying Tigers from scoring in eight of the nine innings.
Kubichek got the start and did not give up a run over his first three innings. In the fourth inning he surrendered a two-run double to Gresuan Silverio to fall behind 2-0. However, Kubichek retired the next two batters to strand Silverio on second base.
The Mets answered by scoring all five of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jack-Thomas Wold hit a RBI triple to make it 2-1, then Warren Saunders singled home Wold to tie the game 2-2.
Omar De Los Santos grounded a ball to third base to bring home Saunders from third base for a 3-2 lead. De Los Santos reached on an error. With two outs in the inning Branden Fryman belted a two-run double off Lakeland starter Nick Davila to open up a 5-2 advantage.
Luis Moreno pitched the next three innings scoreless for the Mets. He got a 4-6-3 double play in the fifth to escape trouble then got a line drive double play in the sixth.
Grant Hartwig pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth to earn his first save. He induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The Mets (56-54) are off on Monday. They begin the final series of the 2021 minor league season on Tuesday when the Jupiter Hammerheads come to Clover Park. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
