Brett Baty named New York Mets minor league player of the year

Congratulations to Brett Baty, the New York Mets Minor League Player of the Year! Baty began the 2022 season with the Rumble Ponies and emerged as one of the top hitters in the Eastern League. The 22-year-old infielder led the Eastern League in batting average (.312), on-base percentage (.406), slugging percentage (.544) and OPS (.950). Baty was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of July after reaching base safely in 21 of 23 contests that month and posting a .365/.435/.688 slashline. Baty led the Eastern League in home runs (eight), RBI (27) and OPS (1.123) during the month of July. The third basemen hit 19 home runs and drove in 59 runs in his 89 games with Binghamton.

On August 8, Baty was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse and reached base safely in five of his six games with the ball club, including three multi-hit efforts. 11 days later, the infielder was promoted to the majors and became the fifth player in franchise history to homer on his first major league pitch in the Mets 9-7 victory over the Braves. Baty played in 11 major league games and hit two home runs with five RBI before landing on the 10-Day Injured List on August 29 due to a UCL tear in his right thumb. 

Baty finished his minor league campaign leading the organization with a .315/.410/.533 slashline. He led the organization with 76 runs scored and was sixth with 19 homers.

Baty will be honored along with the other organizational award recipients during a pre-game, on-field ceremony at Citi Field on prior to New York’s 4:10 p.m. game against the Washington Nationals today.
