Paul Articulates – The Contrarian View

Those who value diversity understand that when you see several different perspectives, the difficult decisions become clearer.  So having processed all that has been said online and in the media about the disappointing end to a tremendous Mets baseball season, I would like to throw a few contrarian views out there to spark some conversation.  The more comments, the better!

Brandon Nimmo should no longer be a leadoff hitter.  I respect Nimmo and the improvements he has made to his game.  However, despite his high on-base percentage (.367) and above average speed, he is not a stolen base threat.  He puts no pressure on the defense or the pitcher by waiting to be moved to the next base.   Marte has a .347 OBP and is an immediate threat when he is on base.   He can score on one hit while it takes two (except long XBHs) to score Nimmo.

Francisco Alvarez will not set the baseball world on fire next year.  Alvarez has a great swing and will someday be a power threat, but that day does not come until he faces a lot more major league pitchers.  With only 45 games at AAA and 5 at the major level, he has not seen enough to read the movement on pitches and adjust.  He had quite a few swings and misses in his 12 at-bats in 2022 and will make the adjustment in time.  Hopefully fans will give him time to learn on both offense and defense without turning on him.

Taijuan Walker should move to the bullpen next year.  Walker pitched very well this year, earning a dozen wins in 29 starts.  He faded a bit in the second half of 2022, though not as bad as his 2021 second half reversal.  He doesn’t have the stamina to go deep into games and deep into the season as a starter.  He does have great stuff, and his splitter can be a difference maker as a short reliever.

Marte’s injury was not the undoing of the Mets.  Despite great numbers this season .292/.347/.486, Marte only played 118 games as his tight muscle-bound frame was prone to injury.  He did not carry the Mets through the regular season, registering only 76 runs (Nimmo, Lindor, Alonso had more) and 63 RBI (4 players had more).  He was just hot when he got hurt in September, and since the rest of the lineup other than McNeil and Escobar was treading water, Marte’s absence just made a big problem worse.

Jacob deGrom is not the top priority for the Mets.  It is hard to say this, but deGrom does not bring enough wins to the team to justify $50M/yr over 10 years.  He has won 27 games in 4 years, and has not registered 100 innings pitched in any season since 2019.  Although it is easy to blame the Mets offense on his lack of success in his two Cy Young Award years, he has not and will not provide ample return on investment for the salary he will command.

The Mets can do more with the money to improve the team than they can by maintaining the status quo with deGrom and Scherzer on the staff.

The Mets pitching staff is too old to maintain competitiveness.  There are currently only six pitchers on the current 40 man roster that are going to be under 30 years old next season (Diaz, Megill, Nogosek, Montez de Oca, Peterson, and Reid-Foley).  Hefner and Showalter did a masterful job managing innings pitched and stress on their pitchers last year and the staff was as healthy as you could expect, even with deGrom missing more than half a year and Scherzer taking two stints on the IL.

That’s not going to last with a group of 30-somethings.  I thought this year’s staff gave the Mets a competitive edge, but when free-agent decisions are being made, Billy Eppler had better be consulting with father time.

I disagree on Nimmo. Younger legs. Marte at 35, you want stealing bases selectively, or he will spend more time on IL.

I have an upcoming article including Alvarez. An external source projects a big year, and I do too…lethal power.

I doubt Taijuan signs a big FA deal to relieve. He can start for many interested teams.

I think Marte’s injury downshifted the offense. IMO, no way they go 5-7 against Cubs, Nats, Bucs in mid Sept with him. At least 7-5 or 8-4.

I agree with you on deGrom and pitching staff age 100%.

My spin -

1. Nimmo will be history

2. Agree on Alvy

3. Walker is history

4. The key to Marte in 2023 is health

5. Jake is history

6. You will barely recognize the 2023 rotation

I think they let Nimmo and DeGrom walk. They sign one of the FA shortstops. Baty and Alvarez get their shots at 3B and catch. Sign Bell for DH.

I'm not sure why so many are ready and willing to open the door to help Walker leave. The last time I looked he's under 30, made All Star level pitching and finished with an ERA 1/2 run better than Carrasco who everyone wants to hand $14 million. If Walker can stay healthy, the duration of his stuff will come. Remember, he hasn't pitched very many games in the majors due to various injuries. Because of that history he was cheap for the Wilpons. Paying more isn't necessarily a guarantee of success. Remember Jason Bay? Remember starting pitcher Oliver Perez? Remember Luis Castillo? Sometimes you want to find bargains where they exist and a guy who pitches to an ERA under 3.50 definitely should be on your radar.

As far as Woodrow's list, where is Vientos? Where is Escobar? Where is McCann? Where is Nido? Where is Vogelbach?

Walker will find more $ elsewhere

Interesting observations. I think Alvarez will have a big impact next year.

Vientos has to win a job in ST or with a hot spell at Syracuse. Escobar is a utity guy with Guilorme . McCann,NIDO? 0ne is gone… Vogelbach is PH and trade chip.

Good writing, Paul. A few comments back at ya .

The Nimmo leadoff argument has been going for quite a while, and it was a hot topic last year after the Marte signing. I remember writing during the offseason that optimally Nimmo would bat leadoff and learn his last tool (SB) from Marte making it a win-win. It is disappointing that it didn't happen. I don't understand - Nimmo is not slow and it seems like adding that component would help his F.A. wallet. I don't know what to think now with the upcoming free agency question.

Alvarez. I totally agree with you on this one. I think he needs at least another 100 games in Syracuse.

Walker. I don't agree with you on this one. Walker is a starter and I hope the Mets can re-sign him for that role.

Marte. I tend to be in the camp that Marte's injury cost the Mets the division. I certainly cannot hang the playoff loss on one person, but I think Marte in the line-up down the stretch would have been worth at least the one win that they needed. I do not know what effect not having him had on Lindor or Alonso, but I can't believe they were pitched to quite as much with Ruf in the line-up. Canha did not provide the same protection.

deGrom. You speak the truth.

Age of staff. You continue with the truth. This is a big red flag for hoping '23 can be as successful as '22.
