50. Cole Schoenwetter, RHP, San Marcos HS (CA) – Unlike Clemmey ahead of him, Shoenwetter is a very polished pitcher who can command three pitches with ease. He varies his arm slot between 3/4 and lower 3/4 but that doesn’t impact that command. His fastball comes with easy velo and suggests it will improve over the years but currently sits 90-94. He has a knuckle curve that has two different shapes at both a true 12-6 hammer and another version with more depth at a 1-7 shape. He also mixes in a change that does lag behind the other two but shows real potential.

In 2022, high school right-hander JR Ritchie garnered a lot of buzz coming out of the Pacific Northwest and ended up going No. 35 overall to the Braves. Multiple scouts have compared Schoenwetter, a standout from Southern California, to Ritchie in terms of his stuff and athleticism. Schoenwetter put himself on the map with strong performances over the summer, particularly at the Perfect Game All-American Classic.
Schoenwetter has the chance to have three at least above-average offerings in the future. While he typically throws his fastball in the 92-94 mph range, it plays better than some harder fastballs because of its spin and his ability to command it up in the zone, leading to plenty of swings-and-misses. His spike curve has hard, downer depth in the zone and has the chance to be a true out pitch, though he sometimes doesn’t stay on top of it, lessening its bite. He sells his fading changeup with good fastball arm speed, and he’s confident in throwing it against all hitters.
The 6-foot-3 right-hander is athletic and projectable on the mound, repeats his delivery well and should have solid command as a result. The UC Santa Barbara recruit gets high marks for his makeup and focus on the mound, and he could end up landing in the same area of the Draft as Ritchie, who went in Compensation Round A.

Schoenwetter popped late last summer and hasn’t stopped climbing to close the year. It’s a real three-pitch mix with a ton to like in a long, lean 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame. The fastball is up to 96 mph and lives 92-94 with life and solid command to all quadrants. The curveball is a secondary that really stands out and borders on plus with tight depth and downer 12-6 shape. His changeup is coming around as a firmer low-80s third offering and shows feel for it. There’s a good amount of upside left in the frame and the stuff has really taken off. He can be a familiar name by next draft cycle.

There is so much to like about Schoenwelter in terms of the body, operation and pure stuff. He's worked up to 95 with a banger breaking ball and an athletic, smooth operation. A bulldog on the mound, Schoenwetter's feel for his curveball and commanding the pitch at the bottom of the zone is what separates him from other prep arms in this class.
