Observations…
Morning.
My 20 year old laptop died this past week and the store I have bought my new one at is trying to transfer my old data, so I am reduced to writing on my phone, with no bells and whistles.
First, a few thoughts on Diaz and Marte.
I would like to move on from Diaz as a closer, but the team has no one in the wings to step in and his contract is too large to move him. WAIT. They could promote Paul Sewald and... err... oh.
Another reason not to sign or resign someone for more than four years.
As for Marte, this injury sort of blows up any chance of moving him in July for quality chips. Ink him in for one of the five 2025 outfielders.
I said some shitty things this week about Edwin Diaz. I hope he has learned something from his arrival on the mound that day. I know I have learned from the unprofessional way I handled how I wrote about it.
Diaz is a great pitcher and, on a good day, is still a top closer. The team needs this guy both short and long term.

Let me ask YOU a question...
We all want Juan Soto next year m on this team, but his agent is going demand a 52 year deal for 100mil a season. Or, something like that.
But what if you spend around the same amount of money, for five or six years, for Max Freed or Jordan Montgomery AND Pete Alonso?
Pete slots back in the 3-4-5 with Alvarez and Vientos and your new starter joins Kodai Senga as the 1-2 anchors of the rotation.

Game 1
The difference in this game was not the Vientos homers. It was the Brandon Nimmo three ribbys. Brandon batting second seems to be working as well as Francisco Lindor batting first. The Mets must operate on all cylinders to pull this off and Brandon is one of those cylinders... as kindly as I can put this, the Mets need to strengthen their pen in July...
Game 2
Well, that was fun. The Mets completely dismantled both the Yankees in general, and both of their top two starters. Sure, no one has an answer to Aaron Judge, and why anyone chooses to pitch to him is beyond me, but one bat does not make a winner. The Mets were the worst team in May followed by being the best team this month. Has this ever been accomplished before?
All I know is Game On and you don’t have to keep looking over your head to check the scoreboard... just Win The Series !!!
And the winning continues against Houston... even my ole friend, Jeff McNeil, is joining in the action. I'd like to see the Mets pass the Cards before the break, but it's going to take some help from the Reds, Nats, and Pirates.
I currently feel there should be two major objectives in the July trading period. First, at least one rental reliever. The Diaz suspension and the loss of Drew Smith demand something to be done here... the other would be either a rental right fielder or someone that could be obtained for a few chips. My friend Gary Seagren wants Kyle Tucker. Thoughts?

Pen needs upgrading. Too many blown pen games in 2024. It is a sticky situation, currently.
When (who?) Ty Adcock threw a nice outing, I thought the Mets would hold on, but the Garrett/ Young combo was not up to it.
I assume Oca pitches today, weather permitting. His opportunity lies before him if he can accelerate his return to competence. Fujinami had the one good relief outing. He could be an option. But, until I see more, neither is a viable option.
Good to see Daiverson promoted.
Some pitchers are “except for” guys. I think Eric Orze is one of those, or he’d already be in Queens. Pitches great except for when he allows a few too many homers or runs. Tylor Megill is another. Just pound the zone dude, keep your pitch count down, and get into the 7th. Move him to the pen, that will keep his pitch count down.
I assume because Edwin was announced into that Sunday game, even though he did not pitch, that is not one game of his 10 game suspension.
McNeil sat on Saturday after his 3 hit game so Iglesias could add 3 hits instead. A hot tandem at 2nd base? Nice.
I anoint Alvarez MVP and he goes 0-5.
Mark Vientos another bomb, another hit, and one of his outs was a line drive. Is he….untouchable? He certainly is inexpensive.
Edwin should return about the same time Senga has his first rehab start.
Yes, Vientos is untouchable. If Pete walks, he's your new 1st basement, if JD is traded or not resigned, he's your new DH. He's got unbelievable power. A 430 foot line drive home run? Ridiculous
It's hard to determine the effectiveness of an overworked pen when the starters never give them any "relief".

Yesterday’s game was blown by Jake Diekman. I really don’t like that guy for some reason. I think he sucks.
We can get a bullpen piece by bringing up our best pitchers and stop playing cutsie with the games. Megill to the bullpen. Bring up Lucchesi, bring up Butto, and bring up Scott. The Mets have enough arms but keep using lesser arms like Danny Young. If Scott was promoted instead of Young, knowing you have a short bullpen and a crappy starter, Scott takes over in the sixth inning and finishes your game. Stearns blew this game for his team.
I don’t want Soto. I don’t want Alonso. He looks immobile on defense and is a windmill on offense. Let him go. FanGraphs said in April that Alonso was worth 4/$56, and if he wants that, I’d think about it. He wants five times that, so good luck buddy. From Acuna, Mauricio, Baty, figure out who to fill that spot. Marte needs to be a DH.
With the Mets keeping the Astros in the race, Kyle Tucker won’t be moved yet. And with the Astros wanting to compete next year, Tucker may not be available until after 2025.
I’m very cranky today over the game yesterday. This game was lost by the front office mostly and a stubborn manager that pitched Garrett up five runs on Friday and didn’t have him fresh on Saturday. Sick and tired of. Rain farts and overthinking.
I like Diaz. He’s good. I don’t think the Mets need to add a rental bullpen piece. I think they need to add Senga back in, figure out who their best arms are, and go from there. No more hiding them in the minors and handicapping the major league team. I’m really pissed about yesterday.

Re: the pen, why not be creative from within instead of looking elsewhere?
Just as Houser has become an effective long man, why not use our extra SPs as well? Scott will be promoted in a few days, and hopefully Senga will return before the deadline. Add Q, Megill, Manaea, Sevy, Peterson, and throw in Butto and Lucchesi, and we're cramming 9 pounds of stuff into a 5-pound rotation. As SPs, a lot of those guys have had trouble going 5 IP, but going 1 or 2 IP could work out well.
Roster-wise, as I see it, the "elephant in the room" is young Mr. Baty, currently tearing the cover off the ball in AAA. What to do? Is he a keeper, or trade bait to a place where he can make us look bad by becoming a star elsewhere?
We don't know if he can reach his potential here unless we give him everyday playing time, but his potential spots are full . We're not going to sit Mark, Pete or JDM to give BB ABs, so what do we do?
I wouldn't sell low on him, but what would he bring in trade? We could keep him upstate, of course, or trade him for pen help, but any decision could turn negative.

I believe Baty's future as a Met begins tomorrow in July.
He, like Vientos received, deserves one more chance to prove he can consistently hit major league pitching but that could happen after a chip for chip trade
But where can he play here unless someone is moved or injured?
Alonso should go to the team with the best pitching options at the deadline and Baty goes to third and Mark to first as we all know Petes going to the highest bidder. The BP will either win us or lose us the playoff spot so DS fix it!

But I totally agree. Danny Young is not Scott. Is he even Josh Walker,whose problem has always been a few too many walks, but that could be the Syracuse strike zone.
A very winnable game slipped away. It starts with Megill. Get the team into the seventh. Pitch to more contact.

If being unsuccessful hurt their development then they don’t have it to begin with
I would ask Washington about Patrick Corbin. He has been somewhat solid the last five starts except for the Mets smoked him. He will give innings and is a lefty. It’s the last year of his deal and I’d rather have him than Quintana.
As for having depth starters, you can still have them, but in your MLB bullpen, where games are won and lost today. What good is keeping something locked up for someday rather than taking it out to enjoy it? I don’t think Danny Young is better than Scott or Butto, and yesterday it cost them not having one of those two guys to go three innings and finish the game. Diekman and Garrett both pitched the day before.
Eddie, I agree. By August, Sproat will have many minors appearances. Reliever in August, starter next year….unless Oca and Fujinami come back strong. Well known that better by what they do today and next week.
Happy for Tyler Jay especially, and Matt Festa could help short term.
May this be Mediocre Megill’s true wake up call. You haven’t arrived. He should be better. He has not been. Become a bullpen force.

Megill was a RP in his college and (I believe) early pro career. Why not move him there as Scott and other SPs are ready for promotion?
