TYLOR MEGILL WAS ONE OF MANY WHO CRUMBLED
Anyone can point out flaws in the seasons of Messrs. Soto, Lindor, Alonso, Diaz, and Nimmo if they looked hard enough.
“So-and-so hit mostly solo HRs, so-and-so hit poorly with 2 outs and RISP. That guy can’t hold friggin’ runners on.”
“Yada Yada, Blah Blah, Blah.”
Here is what I KNOW:
Those five boys come to PLAY!
While so many other important players got hurt for major stretches, or hit or pitched like spit, these guys kept the season from crumbling in a heap. And almost never missed a single game. A combined 11 games in total.
In other words, 157 games thru Tuesday, and those 4 averaged 154 games played.
Beyond those four, a MIGHTY MESSED UP METS MASH UNIT.
Manaea misses half a season. Montas misses half a season, and then falls apart. Minter blows up. Alvarez gets hurt and misses time. Senga crumbles. Canning misses the last 60% of the season, and declares that his least-favorite Greek god is Achilles. Megill’s arm blows up, making it 5 crumbled starters. Siri missed almost the entire season, and I wish he missed the whole thing.
Garrett has great heart, but has off-and-on elbow issues. Tyler Zuber gave the Mets two non-quality innings - a true innings eater. Mauricio wasn’t physically ready for months. David Peterson went from Ace to Joker overnight.
Nicky Madrigal? He didn’t even make it to March.
I’m sure I left some other part-timers out. You know who you are.
Many have hit or pitched in a quite mediocre fashion, and failed to earn a lot of playing time. So…
Soto, Lindor, Alonso, Nimmo - their cost per game is a lot.
They get paid huge amounts. So huge.
Their cost per game played, though, is not excessive. Because they are the indestructible core.
And Diaz has been great. (Hey. They were gonna steal second anyway).
27th, AND TRYING HARDER
Going into Friday’s game, the Mets were 27th in team ERA at 5.13. Despite the addition of ERA-excellent McLean.
August? 6th worst at 4.97 ERA.
EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.
Except this: the teams with the 4 worst ERAs in September, one of which is the Mets, are a combined 28-66.
No playoffs? That will be why.
THEY HAD THE “BABY REVEAL” LAST NIGHT
Women have Baby Reveal parties. Is it going to be a boy or a girl?
If boys win, and girls don’t in my analogy, well, I guess we Mets fans are having a bouncing baby girl!
A 6-2 loss to a superior Marlins team, remarkably with six rookies in their line up.
The Mets’ team ERA over the past two months exceeds 5.00.
STOP JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS!
“Man, do you see how Drew Gilbert is suddenly hitting? 3 HRs.”
Stop jumping to conclusions!
Thru Thursday, he is 5 for his last 45, with 2 RBIs.
“Dominic Smith hitting in the mid .280s? Get him back!”
Stop jumping to conclusions!
The speedy Smith went on the IL a few weeks ago with a hamstring pull.
“Ryan Helsley? Cut him!”
Stop jumping to conclusions!
Through Thursday, last 5 outings, 6 IP, SCORELESS.
One more….Baty before August was meh!
Stop jumping to conclusions!
August and September, 41 for 132 (.311), with 7 HRs. Dang!
OK, Aone more…Cedric has NOT been the Entertainer…but Al Weis wasn’t one either - until he was. So…Stop jumping to conclusions!
If the Mets make the playoffs, how players do from Day 1 until the playoffs end is what ultimately counts.
So, stop jumping to conclusions. You may only have to wait until the season ends Sunday, though, to solidify your conclusions.
MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE:
Everyone’s gone home.
Some, I understand, have off-season blue collar jobs - crypto mining.
Playing at Citi Field? You are playing on Rare Earth.

There is so much to discuss once this season is over. Until then, I guess, we root.
I'm not a rooter. I'm a writer. And I DEFINITELY have plans on writing about this team in the off-season.
One thingI will say now... and it's regarding the current pen.
Stearns must do everything he can do to bring back the top three relievers on this team... Diaz, Helsley, abd Rogers.
The 2026 Mets need these guys
Have the Mets EVER had enough pen? Seriously. I thought at the start of the year that they had enough. But Minter going down early and Sean and Frankie being MIA put immediate pressure on the pen. It eventually cracked and broke. Will Helsley only want to close next year?

Another writer from another place posted this - spewing well-deserved disgust:
That the Mets can be eliminated today with a loss and a Reds win is just sickening. Then I think about how they got here, and I am honestly at a total loss for words right now.
I just can't believe how bad they've been. I can't believe how unfocused they've been. I can't believe how indifferent their play is sometimes. I can't believe how poorly coached they are. And honestly, they just look generally unprepared on a daily basis, they seem unprepared for the moment they're in.
They're as smart as the record says they are. They're as smart as this slow bleed out for 3 1/2 months says they are. They're as smart as the history they could very well make with indelible ink. To me, elimination is more than not making the playoffs. It will wipe out much of the good faith they've built.
Tom
The current pen has returning talent. Just not enough.
I do expect Dylan Ross to help herr
Very well written
Forget about taking Sproat out at 61 pitches, after giving up a ball that just barely dropped fair, one hard-hit ball and a bloop on a good pitch, when the bullpen is gassed and they were obviously going to need tunise 163 pitchers to get through Sat/Sun. 61 pitches! Mendy managing scared. But beyond that, does this team even have a take sign??? You know, the one after the 3B coach touches his nose? Do they not teach take signs in the Yankees organization, and Mendy doesn’t know you can give one? In the midst of 8-9-10-11-12 straight ground balls, down four runs and desperate to get Alcantra out of the game, or at least make him pitch from the stretch, they go down on 6 pitches with everyone up there hacking. Then Mullins leads off the 7th, .215 hitter still down 4 and he’s hacking??? Or Vientos, fresh off the bench, already up in the count 1-0, bases loaded, and he swings at the next two pitches both out of the strike zone? This has been going on all season. Guys swinging away in obvious, no-doubt-about-it baseball 101 take situations. Is Mendy afraid to give guys a take sign? Are they ignoring the signs? Does he just not realize? Mendy is the worst game manager I’ve ever seen. No feel for the situation at all. Lindor - clearly our most fundamentally sound player, leads off the 8th clearly taking a strike and walks on 4 pitches. Good for him, but where the hell is the coaching staff? Nevermind that on defense they play like no one has mentioned fundamentals to them all season. Not covering bases? C’mon. GKR spent two innings skewering Mendy without mentioning his name, and by the 9th, Keith was openly begging Mets hitters to take a strike. It’s absurd. I do not believe that they’ll fire Mendy this offseason, but they absolutely should.
Adam
This should all end tonight
As it should
Adam, I had other plans, so I only saw the first two innings. 2-0 lead. Must-win. Later I looked and it was a 6-2 loss. Was I deflated? No. Because when the losing spiraled over the last 3 1/2 months, I gradually detached. I simply cannot watch losing by veterans anymore. So, for the most part, I don’t. This team is sheer misery. How many years since 1990 have the Yanks made the playoffs? How many have the Mets made? I reached my limit on misery years ago.
To each, their own.
This inglorious end needed to happen so now we'll see whether the FO will do what has to be done. It reminds me of the "opposite episode" on Seinfeld so if everything your doing is wrong the opposite must be right well not exactly but close and you get the idea. It boogles the mind really that this team will probably miss the playoffs and still when is Sterns interviewed he has that shit eating grin on his face like oh well I have a 5 year guaranteed contract and I'll get it right someday very sad indeed.
