Ex-Mets, The Un-signed, 2010 Mets, The Pen... and Jesus Flores

Ex-Mets:

The Texas Rangers signed OF Endy Chavez  and the Washington Nationals re-signed RHP Livan Hernandez

The Un-signed:

Which leaves these unhappy few, the names of note left waiting and wondering. I'd suggest there are only 10 guys left you really need to be interested in at this point, four hitters, and six pitchers: John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez, Jarrod Washburn, Braden Looper, Joe Beimel, and David Weathers among the moundsmen, and Gary Sheffield, Jermaine Dye, Joe Crede, and Carlos Delgado among the batsmen. - link

2010 Mets:

So, how did it all go so wrong? Just look at the Mets now. They are now arguing over Jose Reyes thyroid. That’s the big story at Mets camp these days. The Mets seem to believe — based on what they’re hearing from doctors — that Reyes has an overactive thyroid. Reyes seems to believe — based on what he’s hearing from doctors — that his thyroid is fine. Everybody is waiting for the results from the latest tests. These days, Jose Reyes’ thyroid has the third highest Q-Rating in New York, behind only David Paterson and David Letterman. It could get its own show by the weekend. - link

The Pen:

Of all of the candidates, only Bobby Parnell and Fernando Nieve have any major league experience. Ryota Igarashi has never pitched against major league hitters. Jenrry Mejia, although currently looking extremely dominant, is still just twenty years of age. It is as if the Mets just threw some guys into a basket and decided to see what happens.

There is, however, one guy who I believe could handle this spot at least adequately. That guy is Pedro Feliciano. The Mets believe him to be their seventh inning guy as always, but beggars can not be choosers. Feliciano is the only pitcher on the roster who has actually pitched in the eighth inning, albeit on a fairly limited and intermittent basis. Most importantly, he has experienced prolonged success at the major league level, and he has shown that appearances certainly are not a factor for him thus far. - link

Jesus Flores:

In an effort to enhance Jesus Flores’s recovery and further protect one of their brightest young players, the Washington Nationals on Wednesday sent Flores to Birmingham, Ala., to visit the surgeon who performed his shoulder surgery last fall, orthopedist James Andrews. That name has become perhaps one of the most ominous in sports, but the Nationals said Flores’s stay with Andrews is merely a precaution. “His arm’s just not feeling good,” Manager Jim Riggleman said. “Just not feeling right.” Flores will stay with Andrews for 10 days to two weeks, and once he returns, he will have to restart his throwing program. Flores already had said he would not be ready for opening day, and Riggleman reasserted that Flores will begin the season on the disabled list. At best, Flores could return in mid-April. At worst, the question may become whether he will play this season at all. General Manager Mike Rizzo is confident Flores will return. — Washington Post - link
