1. We can't be too harsh regarding the pitching... it's week one and many of these guys haven't thrown a pitch to a live human being since last fall. Jerry Manuel has make throwing strikes a priority, and so far. most of the Mets pitchers have accomplished that. Even Ollie.
2. The Mets signed another ex-player today, RHP Kyle Snyder. According to my board, there are plenty of ptichers for the AAA and AA squad, but what the heck do I know. Snyder will help at Buffalo, which the Mets seem to be over-committed this off-season to beefing up.
3. Remember... minor league contracts run out at the end of this season for both Binghamton and Savannah. I have no idea why I threw that in here.
4. Omar Minaya made it very clear today that P Jenrry Mejia will open the season in Binghamton. Fine. Then, send him to the other side of the complex and let some of the guys fighting for a position here get his innings. Mejia now has 5.1-IP of runless ball this spring. Today, he threw 33 pitches, 27 of which were strikes.
5. The sub-bats went nuts today against the sub-pitchers of an SS squad. Chris Carter, the bat I've been touting all spring, hit two home runs, both in the 8-run 9th inning. Lettting Carter up to bat is only going to confuse both the race for 5th outfielder and 2nd first baseman. I stand by what I have said in the past. He has the best bat on the team, but lacks a position to play.
6. By the end of the week, we should start to see some of the regulars staying in the game more, espcially the starters. Next week will begin stretching them to 4-5 innings, the following week to 6-7, and so on.
7. SP John Maine was under a strict pitch count, which was the reason he was pulled before the end of the second inning. There was no pain in his arm.
8. I assume tomorrow is Johan Santana day. It will be interesting to see who catches him.
9. Regarding position battles, still far too early to determine who will play first or catch.
10. Good Mets day all around.
Mack
