LAST GAME: Collin McHugh tossed 7.1 strong innings and Raul Reyes ripped a three-run home run to lead the B-Mets past the Akron Aeros by a 7-3 score in the series finale last night at Canal Park. The win snapped Binghamton’s three-game losing streak and halted Akron’s eight-game win streak. McHugh allowed three runs on six hits and racked up five strikeouts in the longest outing for a B-Met starter in 2012. Reyes lashed his first home run of the season off spot starter Mason Radeke. Binghamton added three runs in the fourth against Jose De La Torre via two doubles and a single. Erik Turgeon and Robert Carson combined for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (0-0, ---) makes his Double-A debut tonight. Germen was promoted from the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) after scheduled starter RHP Zack Wheeler was placed on the disabled list with a right middle fingernail avulsion. Germen went 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five games (four starts) in the Florida State League before his promotion. Signed as a non-drafted free agent out of La Romana, Dominican Republic in October 2007, German began his professional career in the DSL. He spent all of last year with the Savannah Sand Gnats (Low-A), going 7-7 with a 3.93 ERA in a career-high 21 starts.
RHP Jeff Mandel (2-1, 2.67) makes his sixth start of the season and first against the B-Mets. Mandel carried a 1.09 ERA into his last start before getting tagged for six runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings by the Bowie Baysox on April 29. The righty has allowed just one earned run in two starts away from Metro Bank Park. After transitioning from the rotation to the bullpen at the end of the 2010 season, Mandel pitched solely as a reliever last year. He made five appearances with the Senators before logging 43 with the Syracuse Chiefs (AAA). Selected in the 19th round of the 2007 draft out of Baylor University by the Washingtion Nationals, Mandel is in his sixth year in pro ball and fourth with the Senators.
