Dirty Laundry - Old MMs Writer, Mack and Company

Times do continue to change and, with that, some of Mack's Mets original writers have moved on to greener pastures and responsibilties past this subject.

My all-time favorite Mets writer, Jack Flynn, is gone. The whole Wilpon issue got to him over a year ago and he just doesn't have the desire to go rah-rah about this team anymore. I'll miss him.

Mike Friere also has left. He has taken on other tasks in life and just can't commit the time to post regularly here. Mike really wrote some fantastic posts and loved to participate in the 'Mack and Company' features. Good luck Mike.

And ex-Met catcher, Teddy Dzuiba, the only MM writer to get his post re-posted nationally, must dedicate himself to his new financial career.

We wish all of them well.

Some good news.

David Rubin has agreed to take over the very popular 'Mack and Company' posts. He will be posting at least once a week and feel free to email him directly at djrubin@aol.com (does anyone actually still use AOL?)  asking to be part of the team.

Mack, couple of off topic questions. First, do any of the Mets outfielders besides Nieuwenhuis have minor league options left? I'd hate to lose Baxter when Bay returns. Once Bay and Tejada are healthy the Mets roster just can't carry six outfielders so are the Mets going to have a choice about whether Kirk goes down? Second question is why the rush to make Mejia a reliever? The way I see it the Mets need a number 4 and 5 starter. I'd rather see Mejia than Gee and if Mejia proves durable then that is one less starter that the Mets have to find for next year. Am I missing something? Even in his first two rehab starts I think Mejia has shown the ability to throw more strikes than either Harvey or Familia. I hate to say it but have the Mets as an organization gone in the opposite direction regarding Latin players? Armando Rodriguez has the body to be a starter and he is now a reliever so Cohoon can start? Just wondering.

where do I start :)

Baxter and Kirk have options. So does Ike Davis.

The Mets went into tonight one game out of first place. Don't panic. TC and Company are doing a great job with what they have.

Gee started in the wrong direction last year after going around the league twice. Batista is too erratic. Schwinden didn't work and, I'm sure, now has confidence problems. Cohoon is another Gee and A-Rod doesn't have the velo to start in the majors.

I read Adam Rubin's comments about Mejia going to the pen and, frankly, after tonight, I will believe that when I see it.

Everything is guesswork right now, but nothing is going to change for another turn around the rotation. Both Gee and Batista have at least one more bump.

After that, and 2 more (rained out tonight) rehabs for Young... and one more stint for Mejia... things will be re-evaluated.

But, the Mets are winning by going for first downs instead of touchdowns.

Let's revisit this in 7 games...

Funny you should mention Ike. I've been meaning to ask you what your take is on Ike's slump. In retrospect I think it is telling that in early spring that Ike said he compared his approach to hitting as "chaos" and Murph's as scientific. Is it possible that Ike has always been so talented he never had to learn what goes into his swing and thus is in the process of not only working his way out of slump but actually learning what it means to learn the art of hitting? I'm shocked that both Duda and Davis have given up driving the ball to the opposite field which of course makes them vulnerable to pitches on the outside corner. The problem with sending Ike down is that no one can replace his defense.

Actually, Duda's natural position is first base and he wasn't a bad one.

In my book, the jury is still out on Davis, Duda, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis. I want to see them play an entire 162-game schedule hitting all pitchers. Then, and only then, can one evaluate their efforts.

Davis has one swing... violent.

And, he spent very little time working on it, if at all, in the minors.

He hit horribly when he first signed with the Mets, but made adjustments. Lately, all he seems to have down is throwing his helmut (he's also making quite the reputation for himself with the umpires).

I would do one of two things.

1. send him down to Buffalo (or, is that up?), put Duda on 1B, play Kirk every day in right, Bay in left

2. put him back in his original slot in the lineup and leave him alone
