Jenrry Mejia pitched five solid innings in his first start in the minor leagues since last season and the Mets pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in a 4-2 victory over the Brevard County Manatees on Wednesday.
Mejia pitched five games with Triple-A Buffalo last season and 33 games for the New York Mets back in 2010.
Angel Cuan tossed three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the victory to improve to 3-1. Cuan allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Adrian Rosario pitched a scoreless ninth inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts for his ninth save of the season.
The Mets took their first lead of the game in the eighth inning. Wilfredo Tovar hit a leadoff double to left. Danny Muno reached on a bunt single and Robbie Shields followed with a walk to load the bases with no outs. Wilmer Flores grounded into a double play as Tovar scored from third base with the go-ahead run to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.
In the ninth inning, Cesar Puello hit a triple to right and came around to score on an errant throw past third base to make it 4-2.
The Mets trailed 1-0 entering the third inning. Alonzo Harris singled and reached second on a balk. Tovar delivered an RBI double down the right field line to plate Harris to tie the score.
In the fourth inning, Rafael Fernandez ripped his first home run of the season, a game-tying solo blast over the right field fence to make it 2-2.
The Mets visit the Brevard County Manatees for the third game of the series on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
