Three-run 7th gives Herd win, chance for sweep

Lutz's two-out single in the top of the 7th scored 2 runs, extending the Bisons one-run lead lead to 4-1.

The Bisons bullpen finished the job, and the Herd scored a 4-1 win at Gwinnett Wednesday. The Bisons have taken the first three of a 4-game set with the G-Braves, and will look for a series sweep Thursday morning.

Lutz's two-run single was the culmination of a sound offensive inning for the Bisons. Oswaldo Navarro and Jean Luc Blaquiere singled to start the inning, and the runners each advanced a base on a balk. The bases were loaded when a Fred Lewis single scored Blaquiere, and Lutz's effort provided the exclamation point.

The Bisons' 7th inning was an anomaly in a game that featured solid outings from both starting pitchers. Buffalo starter Jeurys Familia allowed only one run in six innings of work, courtesy of a Stefan Gartrell RBI single in the first inning. Familia allowed 4 hits and struck out 6.

For the G-Braves, starting pitcher Yohan Flande gave up 8 hits but was able to avoid trouble until the 7th inning. Flande struck out 6 batters as well, and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) in his 6.1 innings of work.

After the Bisons took the 3-run lead in the top of the 7th, the bullpen stepped in to preserve the lead. Justin Hampson pitched a sound 7th but found some trouble in the 8th, allowing singles to Jose Constanza and Gartrell.

But with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Elvin Ramirez relieved Hampson and answered the bell. Ramirez struck out consecutive batters to end the inning, and retired the side in order in the 9th.
Thursday's series finale is set for 10:35 a.m. first pitch. The Bisons will then head to Charlotte for a four-game set with the Knights.

Bisons Notes: The Bisons had 12 hits on the night, compared with 7 from the G-Braves...Familia gets the victory and improves to 3-1 on the year, with a 4.41 ERA...Fred Lewis had a solid night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI...Elvin Ramirez earns his first save of the season, and maintains a perfect ERA of 0.00 in his first stint in Triple-A ball...The Bisons will have a chance to earn their first true sweep of the season on Thursday. The Herd took the first three of a four-game set with Rochester April 27-29, but the series finale was postponed due to rain.
