Shaky Defense Costs B-Mets Again in Loss ,5-1
BINGHAMTON,NY – Jefry Marte’s fielding error in the eighth inning set the table for afour-run inning as the New Britain Rock Cats completed a two-game series sweepby handing the Binghamton Mets a 5-1 loss on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
Withthe game tied at one, Marte booted Joe Benson’s ground ball to third to startthe eighth. The Rock Cats tagged reliever Erik Turgeon for four hits, includingthree doubles, and scored four unearned runs to take the lead for good.
Forthe second straight game, the B-Mets grabbed the lead first. In the second, Binghamtoncollected three consecutive singles against starter Steve Hirschfeld to get onthe board. Marte and Raul Reyes started the rally with hits and Juan Lagaresgave Binghamton a 1-0 lead with a single to right. It would prove to beBinghamton’s only score of the game.
Thedisastrous eighth inning overshadowed another strong pitching performance fromB-Mets starter Collin McHugh. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits overseven innings. He walked two and struck out four. His only blemish was a WilkinRamirez solo home run in the seventh.
Turgeon(1-3) took over for McHugh in the eighth when things came unglued. DeibinsonRomero and Danny Lehmann supplied RBI doubles and James Beresford supplied arun-scoring single. All four runs were unearned.
Aftergetting on the board in the second, the B-Mets offense went quietly to thefinish line. Hirschfeld posted four scoreless frames to close out his sixinnings of work. Luis Perdomo (3-2) earned the win with a scoreless seventh andCaleb Thielbar closed the door with two shutout frames. Binghamton had justthree hits after the third inning.
TheB-Mets (14-17) head to Manchester to start a four-game series against the NewHampshire Fisher Cats Thursday night at 6:35 PM. The Horizons Federal CreditUnion pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
