SNY.TV: Analyzing what was broken for 2020 Mets and fixing it for 2021: The defense. The Mets have neglected their defense for far too long, and that needs to change. “Whether it's been playing guys out of position, acquiring older players whose range is declining, or relying on players who are simply defensive liabilities no matter where they play, the Mets have lagged behind most of the league defensively for the better part of a decade.”

Mets360 – Mickey Callaway and keeping pitchers healthy. Among other good points Brian Joura notes “In his final year leading the Mets, the club improved to 86 wins and had four pitchers make at least 30 starts and two others combined for 29.”

Rising Apple: Mets should look into a trade with the Indians for Carlos Carrasco. “In 2020, Carrasco made 12 starts and had a fantastic rebound campaign for the Indians. He was 3-4 with a 2.91 ERA. This was even more impressive considering his 2019 leukemia diagnosis.”

The Sports Daily – Mike Phillips’ Mets Player Review Series: Robinson Cano.

Empire Sports Media: New York Mets Player Evaluations: Shortstop Andres Gimenez. “It was easy to forget that Gimenez was just a 21-year old rookie, but his slash line of .263/.333/.398 shows there is still more work to be done at the plate. For a player who has played less than 200 games at AA, it is very promising to see him survive and, at times, excel at the big league level… The glove and base stealing ability of Gimenez is already major league ready...Gimenez was a menace on the bases, successful in eight of nine stolen base attempts. His speed also ranked him in the top 6% in all of baseball.”

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 15th frame, Robin Ventura hits a home run, which becomes known as "The Grand Slam Single," driving the Mets fans into a frenzied state as the team, who lost the first three games of the playoff series, extends the NLCS to a Game 6. The Shea Stadium hero is credited with only a single and one RBI when he fails to touch all four bases due to being mobbed by his teammates on the base paths, with the umpires awarding New York a 4-3 victory after ruling Roger Cedeño, the runner on third at the time, as the only player to have crossed home plate before the on-field celebration began.

Don't want to see Baty go in any trade, unless it is a MLB ready pitching stud...and even then, I'd hesitate.

I think it is dumb to write that Gimenez needs to progress further offensively, as he had a heckuva rookie year, and if he does better in 2021, great, but I'd take those splits from him next year gladly as he continues to become a bona fide major leaguer. In his totality in 2021, his speed, defense, and bat, he was an above average MLB SS.

On Gimenez and Alonso

I agree with you Tom that Andres Gimenz is a very good shortstop. But the problem here with this team is that they actually have four really good shortstops and not just one or two. So what do you do with the rest?

The Mets need first most a top 1-3 starter added in for 2021. Noah is a question and will remain so until he finishes his third start once back.

I like Taijuan Walker for this top three starter role. Watch his youtube and you will see why. Luckily, Taijuan is a FA now. An affordable one too.

Then, I bring in the three homegrown starter kids (Szapucki, Gonzales, and Uceta) to maybe an early on ST session, make trades with other teams to add-in 2-3 more good AAA starters to this mix, so that the Mets have then 5-6 good young starters to look at for the backend of their rotation.

I like this idea way better than signing Happ or Tanaka for a billion dollars and then hoping that move pans out for all 3-4 seasons. Scary.

This is where maybe two of the Mets really good young shortstops come into play, as trade bait players for this. Unfortunately, they cannot keep them all. Guillorme could backup short for whichever top one remains. And the Mets could use Gimenez for the right starting pitcher return.

Part 2: Pete Alonso

I crack up so hard when anyone suggests trading Pete Alonso. I literally fall off my chair laughing. Here's why...

Go check Pete Alonso first season stats from 2019. Now go look up Willie Mays first season stats.

If 2020 was not a shortened season, Pete Alonso would probably had a similar total of homeruns and batting average as 2019.

So what was his slow start all about then?

A: His sophmore season.

Having an off season between 2019 and 2020 to let it all sink in and digesting it. He went to the Mets very quickly. 2019 was his dream come true and he probably had to put it all into context really. He's human people and he'll be fine.

How would you have handled 2019 if him?

A: Same way.
