Mets Draft - Pick 3.82 - RHP - Nate Dohm - Mississippi State

The New York Mets selected Nate Dohm in the third round and 82nd pick in the MLB draft. After a season at Ball State, Dohm transferred to Mississippi State.

Not many expectations were placed on the shoulders of the Zionsville, Ind. native due to him struggling a bit at his previous stop. He finished the season 4-3 with a 5.71 ERA before entering the transfer portal, but the talent was there.

Once he arrived in Starkville, the flame-throwing right-hander settled into a role in the bullpen and thrived. Dohm was dominant in the first half of the season for the Bulldogs but sustained a minor injury.

After being on the shelf for a bit, Dohm was given a try at starting games because the MSU pitching staff was struggling. However, Dohm was not the answer and struggled to make the jump.

MSU head coach Chris Lemonis brought in South Carolina pitching coach Justin Parker this past season, and Dohm reaped the benefits. He was the Friday night starter for the Bulldogs through non-conference play and was dominant in that first month, but he went down with an injury during his start against Evansville.

Nate Dohm was the ace for this Mississippi State staff throughout nonconference play, but an injury sidelined the flamethrower. However, the Indiana native returned and started for the Bulldogs in the series finale against Georgia.

Once again, the junior right-hander felt discomfort on the mound and did not last an inning. Dohm was dominant before the injury, going 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA, 32 strikeouts, and only four walks.

His battery mate tonight, Joe Powell, had high praise for Dohm.

"Everyone saw it out there tonight," Powell said. "It is really good to have him back.... it is gonna be big to have him down the stretch."

It was a blow for this State team to lose their ace, but this team has proven that they are tough all year. This adversity only made this pitching staff better, with arms like Khal Stephen, Jurrangelo Cijntje, Tyler Davis, and Tyson Hardin all stepping up.

It was a kick in the teeth for Bulldog head coach Chris Lemonis to lose his ace, but having others step up in his leave is encouraging.

The emergence of these others has propelled this MSU team into the thick of the hosting discussion. However, the addition of Dohm deepens this staff, which is something they desperately need.

The long-awaited return was worth the wait as Dohm threw two perfect innings. The righty located his 92-94 MPH fastball well and mixed his off speeds well.

Dohm burst onto the scene in 2023 for the Bulldogs chucking upper-90s heat and mixing in a mid-to-upper 80s slider with serious tilt. He's primarily worked in relief, but some see a potential future in a rotation at the next level. The pure arm talent here is substantial, and if his sequencing and secondaries continue to polish up, he could go early in 2024.

Mack – This is what we call a helium pick.

Dohm was a transfer who was supposed to be a big deal at Hall State, but injuries cost him dearly this past season. He has the talent, but can he hold up.

I would develop him as a quality back-end pen piece.

We need pen pieces. Wish Dohm well.
