MACK - Tuesday Morning Observations

Observations –

Well, at 6pm tonight the trade deadline… err… dies.

So far, I love the additions of relief pitchers Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek, and outfielder Jesse Winker. Would have loved if they all had a team option through 2025, but I’ll take what I got here. The additions of Maton and Stanek to Edwin Diaz and Jose Butto give the Mets a solid bullpen base for the rest of the season and Winker brings instant left side pop that is much needed.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a few predictions. You and I will both know if any of these come true by the time you bed down tonight.

1.     First, what I think we won’t see… a seasoned successful starter under contract past this year. I’d love to tell you the Mets will sign a guy like Garrett Crochet. But the cost for pitchers like this is currently through the roof. My guess, it would take three of the Mets top 20 prospects and I just don’t think the Mets will do this kind of trade.

2.     What I do see is one, maybe two, starter rentals to energize the current rotation. Right now, for me, the Mets current rotation is Sean Manaea, David Peterson, Jose Quintana, Luis Severino, and Tylor Megill. Megill seems incapable of pitching effectively past three innings, so I would add him to the pen filling the slot left open by the departed Adrian Houser. The Mets pitched Jose Butto three innings last night, which could be a move to stretch him out if no deals can be made for this will become more defined by tomorrow morning.

3.     As for the pen, there might not be a need to add another pitcher here if Butto remains in the pen and Megill joins him. If not, I see the chance of only one addition here. Probably a loaner for a mid to lower level chip.

4.     I don’t expect Brett Baty to be wearing a Mets uniform by tomorrow. I have no idea where he is going or what the team can get for a trade that includes him, but third base seems to be filled with Mark Vientos. If he’s moved to another position, Ronny Mauricio or Luisangel Acuna are waiting in the wings. Baty has had ample time to prove to the Mets he can hit consistently at the major league level.

5.     Other possible lost players through trades could be Kevin Parada, Justin Jarvas, Jonah Tong, Joander Suarez, Joel Diaz, Christopher Suero, Jeremiah Jackson, Jeremy Rodriguez, Ryan Clifford, Willy Fanas, or Simon Juan.

Mack, good recap of the current state of affairs. Crochet would be worth 3 top 20 hitting picks, or perhaps even one of the 3 being a pitcher. Hitters are replaceable - durable star talent pitchers are gold. I'd like to see Snell or Crochet arrive here, just don't ask either of them to run away from the mound.

I think Chris Scott is a long term risky asset. What he is dealing with now is what he dealt with last year. How long can he avoid the knife, even if he recovers and pitches again in a few weeks? Bottom line is, he was one of the starters for next year, but can the Mets count on him for that?

Pray for the Crotch-man

I like the year he is having this year, but at 114 innings so far this year that is already twice as many as he has thrown in total in professional baseball. The last time he threw as many as 60 innings in a year was 2019 for the University of Tennessee. He would be a good 'keeper guy' to build with, tho.

Baty drives me batty, that much I will say. R 69, your point on Crochet innings is valid. You get him to get you to the post-season, then you hope Senga is ready to take over.

If Senga, Scott, Nunez and Garrett all hadn't gotten hurt in a 20 game span, we'd be all set as is. But they did get hurt. Which hurts as much today as it did yesterday, and will hurt tomorrow as much as it does today and did yesterday. It hurts me today to say this, and will continue to hurt me, but not as much as the day before yesterday, when it hurt even more than today, OK?

Should we pursue Snell?

Doesn't look like Mets are interested in Crochet

I wanted Crochet, but have no interest in the price tag. MLBTR wrote that the Mets have interest in Trevor Rogers, but again, the price tag needs to be worth it. Otherwise, the Mets have enough of their own projects. I could see a Baty for Rogers trade… maybe Parada due to position scarcity. Tong is too far away to move but Hamel would be a likable throw-in, and I don’t want that. Tidwell and Scott have a lesser value and could be good “buy low” guys. Now y’all see why I don’t want to part with anyone.

Funny thing yesterday, someone went in Trade Values and with Snell having a 0.4 rating due to the $$$ and Matt Allen having a 0.4 rating due to his once big name, put a Snell for Allen trade. That was hysterical.

However, that’s a pitcher that can carry the Mets and wouldn’t be prospect heavy. Plus, taking back Tylor Rogers would help with salary height. Plus, how many teams can give that to the Giants? They aint trading with the Dodgers and the Yankees need for hitting than pitching, otherwise why is Nestor Cortes on the block?

So, Snell and Tylor Rogers for Parada, Megill and Houck. Baty to Miami for the other Rogers. And my favorite sneak trade that I’ve been banging for two weeks: Patrick Corbin from the Nationals for a DSL arm.

Stearns has steam coming out of his ears right now.

Is it true that Matt Allan already 40? I’ve lost track.

Interesting news no one cares about…DSL Mets Blue team has allowed 12 runs on 6 hits, 8 walks and a hit batsmen through 4 innings today. Crisp baseball.

Tom,
I check the DSL scores daily!
Ok, why are we not getting better results from our teams? Scouting? Coaching? We seem to come up short every year.

Tom Brennan said...

D J, last year, to my surprise, a lot of DSL guys hit well. But they got bumped up, some of them, and mostly struggled. Some who did well, stats wise, were dropped. DSL #s are very meaningless, and very few are any good outside of the DSL. THE dodgers’ 2 teams in 2023 went a combined 78-28. I wonder how many will even reach the high minors someday.

Tom Brennan said...

D J, both teams combined have played 79 games and allowed 115 runs along with an ERA of 5.02. The 2 Mets teams have 23 total homers, while just one of the 2 LAD teams has 37.

Josh Walker has been sent to the Pirates for Nicolas Carreno, who was playing for the Pirates DSL team. Good to get a prospect back for a designated for assignment player.

GOOD! I don't want any part of his attitude or his inflated ego.

Tuesday afternoon observations: the top two left-handers have not been traded and the Mets are not being heard from. I would put two and two together and expect one of them to come to Queens.

The Mets have acquired Paul Blackburn, RHP, from the A's for Kade Morris.

Rds 900. said...

That's a major move. Think we overpaid.

TexasGusCC said...

Is Blackburn better than Houser?

Tom Brennan said...

I think Blackburn is better than Houser, who had too many bad games this year. But we will find out.

Tom Brennan said...

Ray, I think we’ve seen so many pitchers look good in A ball then start to falter at higher levels. They needed a MLB pitcher now. I like that deal.
