Open Thread: What Will Mets' Record over Remaining Games Be? Who'll They Buy Or Sell By Deadline?

Obviously, the Mets have rebounded from the dregs of 24-35, going 18-8 since then through Wednesday.

Ace Senga seemingly will be back within weeks.

Ace reliever Edwin this weekend to help shore up a beleaguered bullpen.

RF Marte probably returns within weeks, too, along with RP Reid-Foley.

The team has been HITTING, except for the Thursday 11:00 AM 1-0, 1 hit loss where the Mets hitters performed like a recent debater who did not have enough nap time, and the team’s pitching starters have improved.

So, 4 questions for you, understanding that how they play in the last 3+ weeks of July will ultimately dictate buying or selling by month's end:

1) What do you predict will their record be over the last 77 games? Why?

2) Will it get them into the Wild Card?

3) Will they be buyers or sellers?

4) Who specifically should they buy, if going for it, or who should they sell, if giving up?

 - If they buy who do they trade away? If selling, who'd Mets get back?

4)

Educated guess

81-81

Other teams will determine if this is enough

Being in the race will prevent selling and severely hurt 2025

Buying will be 1 or 2 pen rentals

I will go with 88-74. Which means 46-31 from here. Why? I think the team has sorted out its starters, especially if Senga returns around July 23 (let’s say an outing on Sunday another one the following Friday, and one the following Wednesday, which should be around July 17. That would get them back starting by around July 23). The hitting likewise was a mess, but it really looks largely sorted out, especially if Marte returns in a few weeks. So I think they’ll figure something out with Penn support and forward.

I have not personally thought through who those pen possibilities might be that the Mets would acquire trade. Let’s see what Reese comes up with.

I would say

82-80

The Mets will be sellers because they will continue to drop under 500 and then play better and get back to 500 or a couple of games over.

The inconsistencies will force Stearns to sell.

With Senga, Diaz and Marte added to the lineup and loooking at the WC competition there's no reason we shouldn't make a good run. They have to move on from McNeil as almost anyone would be an upgrade and Stewart but he'll go when Marte returns. I know Mack wants Acuna to stay in Cuse but for me I want him hitting 9th so his speed on the bases ahead of Lindor and Co. is so important as I'm an advocate of "Speed kills" and we don't utilize it nearly enough. So with a lineup that includes Lindor Nimmo JDM Alvy Vientos Alonso Marte Bader and Acuna and Senga Sevy Manaea Q Scott and any combo of Butto Megill Peterson with Diaz Garrett Otto and Nunez in the BP and I'll gladly go to war with this group.

For the future the Mets should sell

For the current the Mets should buy

Tough decision by well paid suits

I think Stearns will do both. He will sell off Manaea and Severino but keep everyone else. But the prospects won’t be high minors talent. I’m hoping he trades Peterson. And McNeil.

Verlander probably won’t pitch enough to activate the option, so the Mets lucked out there. The Mets will reboot next year but the injuries to Gilbert, Williams and Mauricio screwed the year of development.

Gus, I think if you sell Severino, you’ve cooked your playoff chances. Having a healthy Senga and Severino in the playoffs could push them past the Wild Card.

Tonight? Severino vs. Skenes.

Sorry Tom...I have to agree with Mac on this one. I'd say 82-80 is where they will finish. This is a really tough call. In my mind they should not trade anyone who they feel is a part of the future. If they can pick up some bullpen help that would be great...if not I would move Scott to the bullpen because he will soon reach his innings limit as a starter. I would also move McGill to the bullpen immediately, he's just not a starter on a decent team.

I would trade one or two of Quintana, Manaea, or Severino (only in a great deal). Or even McGill or Peterson if they bring back a reliever...same with Baty. Unfortunately, we are stuck with McNeil for the time being. I would definitely not bring up any of the newer prospects...they are nowhere near ready.

They really need to stick to the plan they set out earlier.

JoeP, that’s what makes the game interesting…friendly debates.
