B-Mets Pre-Game Notes

LAST GAME: The Richmond Flying Squirrels scored five runs on five hits and a B-Mets error in the third inning en route to hand-ing Binghamton a 6-2 loss last night at NYSEG Stadium. Robert Carson suffered the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits over 6.1 innings. The B-Mets were held to just four hits against three Squirrels pitchers. Starter Clayton Tanner picked up his sixth win with five innings of work. His only blem-ish was a Brahiam Maldonado two-run home run in the third inning. It would prove to be Binghamton’s only offense for the night. Ricky Brooks took over for Carson in the seventh, allowed an inherited runner to score, and finished the game. Hector Correa and Mitch Lively combined for four shutout innings out of the Richmond bullpen.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Jeurys Familia makes his 13th start with Binghamton and first against Richmond. Familia took a no-decision in his last start against the Reading Phillies on August 7. He allowed three runs on a season-high eight hits over four innings in a game the B-Mets would win 7-4. The right-hander allowed two home runs for the second time this season.

RHP Justin Fitzgerald will make his 23rd start of the year and second against the B-Mets. Fitzgerald dropped his last start to the Portland Sea Dogs on August 7, allowing four runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings. The loss bumped his ERA to 3.38, which is still good enough for seventh in the Eastern League. The California native defeated the B-Mets on June 16. He gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings, but got 11 runs of sup-port. Fitzgerald was selected by the Giants in the 11th round of the 2008 draft out of the University of California, Davis.

OFFENSE STYMIED: The B-Mets were held to just two runs on four hits in last night’s ballgame. It was the fewest hits they have racked up in a game since they picked up just three against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the nightcap of a doubleheader on July 14. They won that game 1-0.

THE STREAK CONTINUES: B-Mets reliever Ricky Brooks kept things rolling last night. The right-hander tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and has now made ten straight scoreless appearances since returning from the disabled list on July 16. Over that span he has logged 14.1 innings, allowed just 10 hits, struck out 11, and walked only one batter.

HITTING THE WRONG MARK: With their loss last night, the B-Mets became the first team in the Eastern League to 70 losses. Three other teams at the Double-A level have reached 70. In the Southern League: Carolina Mudcats (73) & Mississippi Braves (71). In the Texas League: Corpus Christi Hooks (75).
