Charleston erupted for five seventh-inning runs and limited Savannah to just three base hits in defeating the Sand Gnats, 5-1, in front of 3,326 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Monday night.
With the victory, the RiverDogs split the four-game set against the first-place Sand Gnats improving to 18-26, 44-70 overall, while the Sand Gnats dropped to 28-16 this half, 67-46 overall.
Charleston trailed 1-0 going into the 7th inning having stranded seven runners with six left in scoring position before the offense woke up and posted five runs against Savannah reliever Michael Hebert (1-1). Anderson Feliz led off with a walk, Garrison Lassiter singled, and Jose Mojica tied the game at 1-1 with a groundball RBI single to left.
Following consecutive outs, Kevin Mahoney put the Dogs ahead with a two-run single to left for a 3-1 lead. Kelvin De Leon was then hit by a pitch, setting the table for Taylor Grote who cracked a two-run triple out of the reach of left field Joe Bonfe, finishing the stanza with Charleston leading 5-1.
Charleston’s Aaron Dott (1-0) was the beneficiary of the late offense, picking up his first SAL win in relief in tossing 3.0 one-hit frames with three strikeouts.
The teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning, before Savannah put two men on base, and Alonzo Harris contributed a RBI single to right field off RiverDogs reliever Tommy Kahnle for the 1-0 advantage.
Kahnle was excellent in his 3.0 relief innings, with Harris’ single being his only hit allowed, while fanning six Sand Gnats.
In his first start since July 24, 2008, Charleston’s Manny Barreda worked the first 3.0 innings, permitting only one hit. The team’s leader in bullpen appearances, Barreda worked around jams in the second and third innings to stay scoreless.
Ryan Fraser worked in and out of trouble in all 5.0 innings for Savannah, limiting Charleston to just six singles, while walking two and punching out three.
