The Richmond Flying Squirrels scored five runs on five hits and a B-Mets error in the third inning en route to handing Binghamton a 6-2 loss tonight at NYSEG Stadium.
Robert Carson took the mound for the 21st time this season and tossed two scoreless innings before things came unglued in the third. With one out, Richmond pitcher Clayton Tanner rolled a ground ball to short that squeaked under Niuman Romero’s glove for an error.
The misplay would prove costly. The next three hitters, the top third of the batting order, all collected basehits. Darren Ford and Charlie Culberson’s back-to-back singles to right field helped plate Tanner with the game’s first run.
Francisco Peguero followed with a two-run double to right-centerfield to give the Flying Squirrels a 3-0 advantage. Two batters later, Chris Dominguez supplied an RBI double of his own and Wed Hodges singled Dominguez home to cap the inning.
The B-Mets attempted to chip away at the deficit in the bottom half of the third against Tanner. Following a one-out walk to Jon Malo, Brahiam Maldonado put Binghamton on the board with a long home run over the left-centerfield fence. The drive, his 21st of the season, proved to be Binghamton’s only offense of the night.
Tanner fired two scoreless innings before handing off to Hector Correa in the sixth. The right-hander threw a perfect sixth and worked around a walk and a single to notch a scoreless seventh.
Robert Carson settled down and kept Richmond off the board until the seventh. He walked lead-off man Sharlon Schoop and induced Darren Ford to fly out before being lifted for Ricky Brooks.
Brooks got Charlie Culberson to fly out to left, but could not get out of the inning unscathed. The next batter, Peguero dumped an RBI single into centerfield to cap his three-RBI night.
Ricky Brooks took it the rest of the way with two more scoreless innings. Since returning from the disabled list on July 16, Brooks has racked up ten straight scoreless appearances, spanning 14.1 innings.
Mitch Lively wrapped things up for Richmond with two shutout frames, striking out three along the way. He made a winner of Tanner for the fifth time this season and handed Carson his team-leading 11th loss.
