Former A's stat whiz Paul DePodesta runs the Mets drafts and his last two first round picks, both high schoolers, were harshly criticized by the New York tabloids. "DePo" tunes out critics and makes the decision he feels is best. Jon Denney, a power hitting catcher, could revive Mike Piazza memories in Queens.

While I do subscribe to the "Best Player Available" concept, I think we also have to consider need. With Travis d'Arnaud nearly ready, Kevin Plawecki looking as good as he has so far, Juan Centeno a lefty hitter who could compliment d'Arnaud down the line, Blake Forsythe growing as he matures, and Cam Maron still a reasonable prospect, the catcher pipeline seems well enough stocked to me. (I'm not even mentioning Francisco Pena, but you never know.) We NEED a power hitting outfielder, especially if Sandy Alderson is not willing to go the extra mile and overpay, if necessary, to pry Giancarlo from Miami. Our highest priority should be the best available college level outfielder.

Herb -

Let me tell you how this game works sometimes...

Yes, you can't trade someone you just drafted, but there has been plenty of times a phone call was made to someone holding, let's say, the 11th pick and a killer catcher was available that would never be around, let's say, 20 picks later when that team that called will pick.

You may not see a McGuire traded later that month (against the rules), but you could see Plawecki on his way to that team that called and someone like McGuire take his place in Savannah.

I'm just saying...

I think I understand how the game works. Unorthadox things happen, like the Mets making a pick for Detroit in last year's Rule 5 Draft. The problem is that you rarely see scenarios like the one you describe actually enacted.

Besides, Plawecki is 22 years old and McGuire is just out of high school and much further away. Do you think McGuire's upside is that much higher than Plawecki's? Is it worth the risk? We need help in the outfield.

I don't know, Herb.

I know no one in the Mets world spoke a word or wrote a sentence about Plawecki until this season. I hope he's for real, but I have come to learn that very little that happens at the A level is.

I also know that the Troika is high school kid crazy and McGuire fits thier kind of plan.

You and I would pick a college OF, but if Wilson and Ervin were both gone, there is no one esle to pick at 11
