Didn’t I Say I Would Never Talk About This Guy Again?

(written Tuesday morning, 3am)

Danny Abriano of Rising Apple dot com reported last night that Peter Gammons had reported that he believes that Stephen Drew will sign with the Mets even though the Red Sox has supposedly offered him a two-year deal?

Was this a long enough run-on sentence about a subject everyone is sick of talking about?

Let’s face it. There are around 1,000 Mets blogs now all trying to keep their ‘hit’ count constant during these last painful days before spring training starts. We all actually got excited last night when Kyle Farnsworth signed with the Mets and we could write about something different than Ruben Tejada and Drew. Mrs. Farnsworth didn't even get excited about that!

Why do people like Gammons risk their professional reputation and keep saying this guy is going to be  a Met?

Did the Red Sox actually offer a two-year deal? Reporters don’t just make up this shit, do they?
I’ve said this before… I don’t think Sandy Alderson had any plan or desire to go into this season with a payroll under $90mil. Frankly, I believe it just has worked out that way. Remember, a lot of money came off the books and it’s not like Alderson hasn’t tried to spend the bucks. The Mets do currently rank 5th in off-season spending.

No, I believe Sandy thought the Drew deal was a slam dunk, that Ike Davis would be long gone, and the Mets current first baseman would be Mike Napoli. It simply didn’t happen that way.
There is still plenty of time to get this deal done, but it is my guess that Alderson is past it. He really doesn’t like dealing with Scott Boras (who does?) and the Mets front office is gearing up for pitchers and catchers.

My guess… one more reliever in camp in the next five days… closer material… then play ball.
