If Yoenis Cespedes, the BP slugger, is physically able to play, be an MLB slugger again, the team's insurer is not a charity, so the Mets will have to play him and thus be on the hook in 2020 for the full $29.5 million...no insurance welfare check.
Let's say Cespedes can play but that his health does not allow him to play more than 80-100 games.
And let's say he shakes off rust for those games and can hit almost like he did in 2015-16-17.
He was the player, after all, who used electrified paddles to shock the comatose Mets back to life and got them to the 2015 World Series.
In 2016 and 2017, he was expected, when those seasons started, to be their offensive cornerstone, much as Pete Alonso turned out to be in 2019 for them.

OK, how about if he hits in 2020 (when his post-op feet could allow him to play healthier than in 2016 and 2017) just like he did in his injured 2016 and 2017? Not as great as 2015, but like 2016 and 2017?

Yo was up 432 times in 2016 and 2017, with 23 doubles, 26 HRs, 71 RBIs, .282.
That pace for a full season - say 600 ABs - would be 32 doubles, 36 HRs, 99 RBIs.
Not that I expect a full season is possible, just to present the level of impact if he did get 400 ABs or so. Significant.

Compare that to last year's 5 righty OFs - excluding J.D. Davis, that is:
Lagares, Broxton, Gomez, Altherr, and Rajai Davis - roughly the same number of at bats as Yo had above:
449 ABs, 22 doubles, 10 HRs, 49 RBIs, .196.
Cespedes would, if reasonably healthy, would most likely be a major offensive upgrade over that Flunky Junky Clunky Funky Five.
Expensive, for sure, but a major upgrade.

I like Reese's D.Smith/K.Maeda deal, and Yo to DH-Land for a reasonable talent ( a top 100 prospect?) is enchanting, but not likely. But if the status quo remains, I can live with:

Hobie that would be tons of power - Cespedes could be a perfect DH, too. But last I checked with the NL...
Still and all, they CANNOT allow 5 dudes to have 450 at bats and hit .196. Cespedes on a stump would hit better than .196. That was about 1 in every 12 at bats for the Mets in 2019. Heck, the Mets' pitchers in 311 at bats hit just a little lower at .167. Batting black holes lose pennants.
Mack, Mickey Mantle gimped a lot at the end - and he was still good, and a lot better than the Faulty Five Mets of 2019.
Cespedes has a possible large new contract in 2021 to motivate him, and we'll see if that makes him resurrect himself. If he can't greatly exceed the Faulty Five, he should retire on disability.
