Mack – Top 25 2020 Mets Prospects - #6 - 10

A man named John Sickles use to have a great series of top 30 prospects for all the major league teams. For some reason, the feature was discontinued.

John would rate the players with the A through F system, using A as a can’t miss prospect, B a probable, C a possible, and F… well, you can figure out what F meant.

The last top Mets prospect list he had led with a sub-headline of “ if you love C+ prospects than you are going to love the Mets."

Nothing much has changed. We have a couple of A/A- guys, a handful of B+/B/B- players and the rest are C+.

Was John right? Well, he did not have Jeff McNeil’s name come up until he ended the series with players in one paragraph entitled ‘honorable mention’.

Here’s this week’s # 6-10:

PC - Ed Delany
10.    RP Ryley Gilliam – Yeah, I know my favorite Clemson closer stumbled a little last season, but, in my opinion, he was rushed to the AAA level. This is still a ++ arm that will be well rested this spring.

PC - Ernest Dove
9.      RP Stephen Villines – Another of our premier relievers in the chain. Watch for him to repeat in Syracuse what he did the past season in Binghamton. Nogosek, Gilliam, Villiness… the future looks bright in the 2021 Mets pen.

8.      SP Josh Wolf – We really did a great job, first with scouting and then with signing, this guy. It will be a good 3-4 years before he’s ready, but, right now, he looks like a future star in this game.

PC - Ed Delany
7.      SS Andres Gimenez – In my opinion, we have three great shortstops in the chain. One plays in Queens (Rosario), one plays two levels below this guy (Mauricio), and the last is Gimenez. He’s also dead last in positive press. Let’s see how much that motivates him in 2020.

6.      OF Freddy Valdez – Our latest Latin uber-prospect. Valdez has turned heads both on the DSL field but also in Florida, playing for the GCL-Mets. The Mets will move this kid along much quicker than players playing at other positions. He is showing he could be our next great outfielder.

About the time Brandon Nimmo hits free agency Valdez will be ready.

Six thrust 10 represents a lot of potential. Hopefully, Valdez will soon have us all doing the Freddy.

I agree Reese

Valdez looks like a keeper.

I'd like to see Giminez earn to play CF in ST, and if all goes well, let him him play there regularly in Syracuse during the season.

Otherwise, he may turn out to be trade bait or a bench player behind Amed.

I'd trade Michael Conforto, Nipsy Russell, and Robert Gsellman for a new right fielder like Austin Meadows or Jorge Soler.

I'd then sign and trade Marcus Stroman and Andres Gimenez to Boston for 3B Bobby Dalbec and kid lefty starter Daniel McGrath. Mets need another starter to better Matz's annual output.

And finally I'd trade Tomas Nido (and his collection of mark-free bats) back to the PR for some Seltzer water, if they have any left over from the cash give-away program party that is.

LGM!

C. Flexen, C. Oswalt, W. Lockett, P. Sewald, C. Mazza, Something Avilan, and Jeremy Hefner... "Has anybody here, seen my old friend John. Can you tell me where he's gone. I thought I saw a lot of bad pitching come up over that hill, but then here comes Ronald McDonald the Clown.

Q: Can Drew Smith toss a ball yet? Maybe this one. Man, let's hope so!
