OPEN THREAD: Jeremy Hefner

The Mets named ex-Met Jeremy Hefner as their new pitching coach.

Thoughts???

Hefner has good reviews, but his own pitching as a player was ineffective.

So to me, time will tell. But not to worry: If Hefner fails 10 years from now, we'll still have Regan.

I don't judge coaches by what they did as a player. After all, was Don Mattingly the second coming of John McGraw? What about Ryne Sandberg or Robin Ventura? It's the guys who DON'T have a lot of natural talent who spend the majority of the careers on the sidelines or in the minors who tend to succeed as managers and coaches.

He is supposedly a "new age" type of coach that will rely heavily on analytics, so that will be interesting to watch.

At least BVW seems to be interested in cutting edge technology, instead of being trapped in the past. It doesn't guarantee
success, but at least we aren't repeating the same things over and over while expecting different results, right?

As is the case with any coach, it's we shall see but additionally we may never know. Cutting edge or old school, the players need to execute. If Brodie doesn't upgrade the talent depth, and they again have too many innings of AAAA pitching, it won't matter who the coach is.

A Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to all.
