If you can push aside the off-the-field issues, Darryl Strawberry was one of those players for whom you dropped everything to watch the at-bat. Throw in the good fielding, baserunning speed and cannon arm and you had their all-time best player there.
Darryl - who else could hit the roof in Montreal? Or a clock tower in St Louis? In his first Mets AB, when he launched a huge foul drive that caused everyone to gasp, you sensed that the team's long drought of awful play would soon be coming to an end.
Special Mention? Dave Kingman. The man with more power than Darryl.
Third Place: Michael Conforto. MC Hammer.
Actually, the one missing the honorable mention is Le Grande Orange.
Ken Singleton-my favorite Met of all time. Got his first 2 hits in Jarry Park in 1970, with the 2nd being a home run. Called up to replace Ed Kranepool who was sent to Tidewater. Unfortunately he's been broadcasting on the "Dark Side" for quite a while.
Is Granderson still playing?
And, if so, can we approach the team and get permission to talk to him about becoming the Mets manager?
holmer, do you remember Singleton's last Mets HR? Assuming my faulty memory is correct, he hit a titanic shot that hit way up the Shea scoreboard and ricocheted back onto the field without bouncing in between.
In my grandfather's honor, I choose Rusty. His favorite was Rusty Staub. Rusty played the entire 1973 World Series with a separated shoulder he suffered crashing into the wall in the NLCS.
Kingman wasn't purely a rightfielder, although I loved watching him hit when he was on a streak.
Strawberry was the best hitter of the bunch, but would occasionally get lost on defense.
My mind is blanking on the rightfielders in 2000 and 2006.
Ellis Valentine?
I would pick Strawberry, but all those layers from the mid-80’s juggernaut qualify. I think the second best player talent-wise is MC Hammer, but he needs to have a breakout. I gave several reasons a couple of months ago why I see him in the same light as Daniel Murphy, but Conforto will have a big year this year. Very big.
