John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 9/10/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Neil Walker, Anthony Swarzak, and Phil Evans, Mets 7 Orioles 6 in maybe the best game so far this year and the Braves score 29!

Mets Links:

Mets 7 Orioles 6 Rick Porcello 4 innings, 10 hits, 5 runs, 5 ER, 0 walks, 3K, 66 pitches – 45 strikes;  Chasen Shreve, 1.1 innings, 2 hits (1 HR), 1 run, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 Ks; Jared Hughes, 1/3 innings, 0 hits, 1 walks, 1 HBP; Justin Wilson, 1.1 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 1 K, 1 HBP; Jeurys Familia (W, 2-0) 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 walk, 0 runs; Edwin Diaz (SV, 3) 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 K, 0 runs; Pete Alonso 3 for 4 (HR #11), 2 runs scpred, 1 RBI; Jeff McNeil 2 for 3 (HR #4), 3 RBIs, 1 run scored, 1 walk; Michael Conforto 1 for 3 (HR #8), 1 run scored, 1 RBI,  – now hitting .340; Andres Gimenez 1 for 4 (HR #2), 1 run scored, 1 RBI; Dominic Smith 2 for 4, 1 run scored; Robinson Cano 1 for 4, 1 RBI; (Box Score).
SNY.TV:  What's next - The Mets have a day off on Thursday before starting a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays in Buffalo. Jacob deGrom will take the ball against righty Chase Anderson.

Brian Joura Mets360.com: Rick Porcello is grateful that the Mets have Michael Wacha. Otherwise, there would be a ton of attention on how rotten he’s been this year. He surrendered 5 ER in 4 IP and now has a 6.07 ERA for the season.

Metstradamus: The Mets then started to crawl back from the 5-1 deficit that Porcello dealt them. Jeff McNeil hit his 4th home run in four games to bring it back to 5-3, but D.J. Stewart launched one to the Coke Corner off Chasen Shreve in the top of the 5th to make it 6-3, and seeing Chasen Shreve get touched up gave me the distinct feeling that this was over.

SNY.TV: After Robinson Cano’s RBI single in the fifth cut the Baltimore lead to 6-5, Jared Hughes got into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. The Mets then brought in Justin Wilson, but Ruiz drove a ball to deep into right field that looked to be a bases-clearing double at the least. But Conforto made the best catch of the season for the Mets, making the over-the-shoulder grab right in front of the wall to end the inning.

Mike Puma NY Post: When in doubt use the long ball. All it took was four of them on Wednesday, including an eighth-inning blast from Pete Alonso for the lead — after Michael Conforto had saved the game with a highlight-reel catch — sending the Mets to a 7-6 victory over the Orioles at Citi Field.

Here are the full highlights from You Tube but with the Orioles announcers.

SNY.TV: Mets hope Michael Conforto's catch, Pete Alonso's heroics can turn the tides: 'This was a huge team win'. Mets refused to quit in 7-6 comeback victory over Orioles.

Joel Sherman NY Post: The Mets are wasting peak Jacob deGrom. “Jacob deGrom is the pitching Mike Trout…The Mets have had their Tom Seaver, especially these last three years, yet are looking at going 3-for-3 in not even making the playoffs.”

Mike Puma NY Post: Luis Rojas considering going with four-man Mets rotation.  The Mets won’t need a fifth starter until Sept. 19 when they face the Braves.

SNY.TV: Mets' Luis Rojas gives positive injury updates on Steven Matz and Dellin Betances, but not Jed Lowrie. "’I know that he's (been getting) that shot, the injection in the knee," Rojas said. "And I know that those were gonna be different injections -- it was gonna go progressively. As far as whether Jed Lowrie was taking part in any baseball activity? ‘I don't know what he's doing,’ Rojas said. Dellin Betances and Steven Matz, who are both on the 10-day IL, are working their way back.”

SNY.TV: Mets RHP Robert Gsellman placed on IL with fractured rib. The corresponding move to Robert Gsellman hitting the IL was recalling RHP Drew Smith from the Alternate Training Site in Brooklyn.

Ken Davidoff NY Post: How the Mets honored 9/11 heroes amid the coronavirus pandemic. So on Tuesday morning, the Mets pivoted and did something that respected both that day’s heroes and COVID-19: Four 2001 Mets – John Franco, Al Leiter, Robin Ventura and Todd Zeile – jumped on a Zoom call with four Fire Department of New York members (as well as the wife of a fifth) who were on site that day.

Newsday: Mets sale to Steve Cohen going 'smoothly'. “The deal is expected to become official within the next week or two, according to the source. If and when that happens, Cohen still will need to be vetted by MLB and approved by 23 of the other 29 club owners, a process that could take more than a month.”

MLB.com: Braves set NL standard with 29-run outburst. Atlanta breaks Modern Era record in National League (since 1900) Braves 29 Marlins 9 (Box Score).

MLB.com: Bauer outduels Yu in scoreless 10-K gem. Reds 3 Cubs 0 (Box Score).

White Sox 8 Pirates 1 (Box Score).

Conforto and 4 homers save the day. The Mets live on.

Milwaukee wins 19-0, Braves win 29-9....wow.

Duvall 9 RBIs. Travis D had his 7th HR and now has 25 RBIs in just 109 ABs, hitting .312. Boy, do I wish the Mets kept him. All Met catchers are just 35 for 160 with 16 RBIs, with 7 of those on 2 swings of the bat and a wasteland otherwise.

Carlton Willey gets all 3 ALou boys out in the same inning - cool!.

Miami put up 9 and still lost by 20 in Atlanta. They suck. I counted at least four cutoffs that no one caught and rolled through the infield just on the highlights alone. Sad. Yes, TDA raking is BS, but I just don’t think that guy liked NY. He had plenty of time to show something although it didn’t make sense to cut him when they did.

On the plus side, the good guys won last night but still four under .500. Time for the pitchers to get their act together.

Thanks Tom and Gus. Should the Mets have kept TDA all last year and let Nido play everyday in Syracuse to work on his hitting. Absolutely. However, I think TDA just needed a change in scenery and having his old hitting coach in Tampa helped a lot. Nido is still the better option going forward based on his defense alone. A bigger question will be what will the Mets do once Nido is able to come back? Carry three catchers and one less pitcher? Not sure if that would work given how short most starters are going. Release one Wilson Ramos, Nido, or Chirinos? We will see.

Really great and fun game last night. The Mets core hitters which I now include Gimenez are just so fun to watch. I really wish the would give Guillorme so more chances even if its pinch hitting for one of our terrible catchers. His defense looks pretty legit and he has hit really well in limited capacity. I would rather see him get ABs than Frazier.

What is becoming more and more evident every day is how bad Stroman screwed us. He is likely the difference between the Mets making the playoffs or not. So disappointing that he chose to let down the fans and team for his own personal agenda (I do not believe for a second that covid is the reason).

Thanks Dallas. Great game indeed last night. With Cano something like 1 for his last 20, Guillorme should start Friday in Buffalo to give Cano two straight days off. I am sure Cano wants to play everyday, but I think he needs a breather now and then to stay at peak form.

Stroman? I think with COVID we have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He would have been a big difference this year though. Who knows, if we go to a bubble format for the playoffs, he may change his mind and come back if the Mets get there.
