213 Miles from Shea: Game Preview: Phillies vs Mets

Amazing Avenue: Mets’ offense matches deGrom’s brilliance in 14-1 win. The Mets scored a ton of runs for deGrom. This is not a joke.

MLB.com: Total deGrominance: 35 swinging strikes. Mets ace is this generation's version of the late Seaver. “He [deGrom] struck out a dozen Phillies over seven innings of one-run ball in a 14-1 win at Citi Field, running his streak of consecutive starts with two or fewer earned runs allowed to 12. Only Seaver, Dwight Gooden and Johan Santana compiled longer such streaks with the Mets…In extending that streak, deGrom lowered his career ERA to 2.58. The all-time franchise leader? Seaver, at 2.57.”

Brian Joura Mets360.com: The Mets hit five home runs en route to setting season highs in both hits and runs to back Jacob deGrom, who was his usual terrific self, as the Mets won in a laugher, 14-1, over the Phillies Sunday afternoon. The win raised the team’s record in blowouts – typically a strong measure of a team’s quality – to 8-3. The Mets have now won four of their last five games and scored 40 runs in that span.

Metstradamus: Alonso, for his part, had three hits including that home run, another home run in garbage time in the 8th and a double. (That hitch in his swing seems to have been downgraded to a small hump.) Jeff McNeil hit his first home run of the year which put the final nail in Nola’s outing, and Brandon Nimmo hit a trans-continental off Heath Hembree to put the game away at 7-1.

Mike Puma NY Post: Andres Gimenez stroked a two-run single in the fourth against Aaron Nola that extended the Mets’ lead to 4-1. It continued a surge for the rookie, who for now at least has displaced Amed Rosario as the primary shortstop. Gimenez is 5-for-11 in this series after he delivered his first major league homer last week.

David Lennon Newsday: With eye on playoffs, Mets manager Luis Rojas making the tough decisions on juggling players.  “Andres Gimenez made his third consecutive start at shortstop and Dominic Smith was back at first base instead of Pete Alonso, the DH for the fifth time in his last nine starts. Those are no longer aberrations or rest days.”

NY Post: Mets’ David Peterson set to return to rotation vs. Phillies. “The Mets entered play [Saturday] without a win by a starting pitcher in 19 straight games, tying the longest drought in franchise history. They didn’t break the record thanks to Seth Lugo’s start in Saturday night’s 5-1 win over the Phillies. The 1980 Mets also had a stretch of 19 games without a win from the rotation.

MLB Trade Rumors: “The Mets outrighted Hunter Strickland to their alternate training site, the team announced.  Strickland was designated for assignment earlier this week and cleared waivers, then accepted the outright assignment. In another Mets move, the Amazins released right-hander Pedro Payano.”

SNY.TV: Mets Jacob deGrom after Sunday's gem: 'It's an honor' to be compared to Tom Seaver. DeGrom is in the running for a third-straight Cy Young Award winner.

SNY.TV: Mets' Pete Alonso on Jacob deGrom: 'He should be a Hall of Famer'. After striking out 12 in the win over the Phils, Alonso wasn't afraid to call it already for No. 48.

SNY.TV: Mets' Dominic Smith discusses being a focal point in Mets offense. Smith leads team in RBI, doubles, and OPS. "[Chili Davis] tells me you can have the best swing in the world, but if you swing at bad pitches, it doesn't matter," said Smith. "You really have to focus on locking it in and getting the pitcher over the plate so you can put a good swing on the ball."

Amazing Avenue: State of the System 2020: Outfield. The Mets minor league outfield depth is very thin in the upper levels, but intriguing at the lower levels.

MLB Links:

Freeman hits 2nd grand slam 2 days after 1st. Four-time All-Star had zero in first 1,383 career games. Braves 10 Nationals 3 (Box Score)

Arozarena homers twice in Rays' walk-off. Rays 5 Marlins 3 (Box Score).

The Olympian: Dunn quality again, both Kyles homer as Mariners top Rangers, win fifth straight.  Justin Dunn 6 innings 2 runs, 2 ER, 4 hits (2 HR), 4 walks, 4 Ks; Mariners 4 Rangers 3 (Box Score).

MLB.com: Lives of Brock, Seaver linked even at the end.

Always good to remember that before Seaver broke Koosman's season wins record in 1969, Koosman broke Seaver's one year old wins record when he won 19 in 1968.

Galen Cisco - now there is a baseball name for ya. He didn't win many for the early 60s amazins.

Boys broke out the lumber yesterday - hitting .275 now. Can they climb to .290 by season's end? Why not? This team is simply loaded with hitters - even without some guy who traps wild boars.

Jake shows real humility in considering himself not quite yest the equal of Tom Seaver. Imagine for a second how much lower Seaver's career ERA would have been if he knew he only was expected to go 7 innings, occasionally 8. And aired it out that much more in his shorter innings.

Jake 35 swings and misses? In just 7 innings? That's insane.

I wrote a while back that this would be the year Dom Smith would, at the same age, match the break out year of Adrian Gonzales. I think I was wrong - Smith might be surpassing Adrian. He could have a hard time winning the MVP against Soto and Tatis - but he could do it.

Love the defense first lineup with Gimenez and Dom Smith. It will be interesting to see how this goes down the stretch and how the Mets do.
